Maya is a no, I would say that as May-ah

Maya or Maia.

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2016 18:04

I'd think you were trying to make a commonplace name more interesting.

Why not Maya?

fruityb · 18/01/2016 18:04

All Maya's I've known at school are pronounced properly.

Vixxfacee · 18/01/2016 18:06

I would pronounce Maya as may a
I would spell it Mya.

Doggy2353 · 18/01/2016 18:11

The reason to not Myah is because I would say it Maya...

*Maya

I would always say Maya as Mi - ya (I think it's mi-ja in Spanish). I have taught Maya's and never heard it as May-ya. But I can see why people might say it that way, so to make it easier for a child Myah would save her having to explain.

TheMouseThatRoared · 18/01/2016 18:14

Why would you pronounce it wrong?

Doggy2353 · 18/01/2016 18:16

It's just the way my brain looks at it...

Jw35 · 18/01/2016 18:18

Myah I would say my-yah and maya I would say may-yah so I think your right on op.

VagueIdeas · 18/01/2016 18:21

Myah just makes me think of someone sneering "nyah nyah na-nyah nyah!"

Doggy2353 · 18/01/2016 19:19

Hmm, not sure on it now...

OP posts:
Jw35 · 18/01/2016 19:22

You could go with Mya

ShutUpLegs · 18/01/2016 19:23

I immediately thought it was a mis-spelling of Maya - either inadvertent or trying to be wilfully "alternative".

ShutUpLegs · 18/01/2016 19:24

Mya looks like a mis-spelling of Mia.

Sorry OP.

Doggy2353 · 18/01/2016 19:26

It was between Meah or Myah... I'm really not one for creative spelling, but I'm just not keen on the originals :(

I would go for the ordinary spelling, Doggy - after all, you are going to be speaking/hearing the name far more than you are going to be writing it/seeing it written.

Fwiw, my parents went for an alternative spelling of my name - it is a very normal name and a very normal alternative, but having the alternative spelling means I have spent my entire life having to spell my name out to everyone.

If you choose a spelling that 'says' the name to you but won't to anyone else,my our child will have to do the same as me, and I promise you, it is a pain.

I am assuming that the name you like is Mia (pronounced Mee-Ah) - I think it is a lovely name, and very elegant.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/01/2016 21:22

If the name you want is pronounced M-eye-ah, I would spell it Maya, which is also a gorgeous name.

iciclewinter · 18/01/2016 21:26

If you like Meah, then how about Leah?

annandale · 18/01/2016 21:29

I'll be honest, when I saw your thread title I read it as 'm YAH' as in a posh air kiss myah myah kind of sound. It didn't register as a name at all.

TrinityForce · 18/01/2016 21:33

I'd go Mya, all the Mia/Maya spellings are a big ambiguous I think.

So yes, Myah or Mya look the most like you want it pronounced, so I'd use either.

tinytoucan · 18/01/2016 23:04

I went to school with a Myah- pronounced mye-ah (so I don't think it's an unusual spelling providing that's how you want it said!) and from what I remember she never had anyone mispronounce her name. I think if you prefer the Maya (may-ah) pronunciation you'd need to spell it that way to avoid her having to correct people every time

Hastagwhatever · 18/01/2016 23:05

Myia looks nicer than myah

Phoebesss · 18/01/2016 23:41

I like Myah

Sophronia · 19/01/2016 00:11

You could spell it Maia?
