Girl's alternative to Mike/Michael?

RainwildsGirl · 09/10/2015 19:04

We are wanting to honour DH's grandfather who's name is Mike but we have a strong feeling this baby will be a girl.

Are there any other alternatives other than Michelle (which I hate) and Michaela?? It will be a middle name, not first name.

Misha?

BreeVDKamp · 09/10/2015 19:08

Mika/Micah/Micha?

BreeVDKamp · 09/10/2015 19:09

Bit far removed, but Kayla? I knew one.

wigglesrock · 09/10/2015 19:10

Sorry I meant to add, I know its a Russian boys diminutive for Michael but I know 2 little girls called it.

Lweji · 09/10/2015 19:10

Isn't Misha supposed to be a diminutive of Mikhail? Or at least a male name?

SwedishEdith · 09/10/2015 19:11

Some girls are actually called Michael. The actress who played the mum in the Waltons was Michael Learned. And the bass player of the Bangles (but she changed her name to that)

sugar21 · 09/10/2015 19:14

Michaela

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2015 19:14

We had this issue with DD (DF was called Michael) and she ended up named after the title character in his favourite book (it's not actually such a tenuous link to him though, as he spent his life collecting different editions, translations, illustrations of this book; as well as other books by and about the same author, and other memorabilia).

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2015 19:16

Mia ?

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2015 19:19

Shelly?
Leah ? (the end bit of Michael!)

RainwildsGirl · 09/10/2015 19:20

hmm....Mika is a possibility I guess. Mia is a nice name but isn't recognisably from Michael/Mike. part of the issue is our other DC have the actual names of the person they are honouring as a middle name, so its obvious why that is their name to the family and I wanted the same this time.

which I guess brings us back to Michaela....which I just don't love that much.

bike if I did that the poor child would be named out of some hideous crime thriller book!!

I think Michael makes a lovely middle name for a girl

ConesOfDunshire · 09/10/2015 19:31

Mimi? Perhaps as a middle name?

What was grandfather's middle name?

BreeVDKamp · 09/10/2015 19:32

Oh I love that Leah idea! Subtle but meaningful. But doesn't meet the 'obvious' requirement to match your other DC.

RainwildsGirl · 09/10/2015 19:32

grandfather's middle name is a surname so even less suitable!!

RainwildsGirl · 09/10/2015 19:33

The Leah idea is interesting, might float that one past DH.

Make one up? (MN pet hate but hardly matters for a middle name)

Mikha
Mykea
Etc

Sophronia · 09/10/2015 19:47

Michal (Hebrew girls name meaning 'brook')
Micheline
Michelina
Michela
Michala
Mica
Michelangela
Mihaila

Gwenhwyfar · 09/10/2015 19:49

Michelle

Sophronia · 09/10/2015 19:49

Also Micaiah / Micaia (my-KAY-ah or my-KYE-a) is a Biblical name used for both males and females.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/10/2015 20:33

I once encountered a Michaelene, pr Michael-een, not Mish-ell-een as I'd vaguely imagined.

I like Micheline, could become Mishi.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/10/2015 20:36

Also, do the two pr. of Michaela help at all? Can be Kayla or kye-la. Arguably the latter might be regarded as more 'grown up' or sophisticated.

Fletcherl · 09/10/2015 20:36

I know a lovely little girl Mikalena who is Norwegian.

Fletcherl · 09/10/2015 20:37

Could you call her Angel for the archangel?

Zhabr · 09/10/2015 22:58

My DD's second name is Mikhaila
