What do you honestly think of the name Topsy?

I knew a Tansy once. A little better than Topsy?

UrethraFranklin1 · 08/08/2015 19:32

You cannot be serious, I refuse to believe anyone would actually consider calling a child Topsy. Unless they loathed them.

anonmam9 · 08/08/2015 22:11

I like it!

BitandBot · 08/08/2015 22:18

I Quite like it. I had lovely elderly relative called Topsy. I don't know if it was her real name though. It's no different to Betsy or Patsy to me.

Hepzibar · 08/08/2015 22:20

It's cat's name.

CrystalMcPistol · 08/08/2015 22:21

Tansy is lovely. A nice alternative to Poppy, Daisy etc.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 09/08/2015 09:17

Get a grip. Topsey? Ridiculous

scarlettsmummy2 · 09/08/2015 09:25

I would think you were a bit light and would stay well clear of you to be honest.

IsadoraQuagmire · 09/08/2015 21:49

The only Topsy I know is the character from Uncle Tom's Cabin. And she iritates me.

BellMcEnd · 09/08/2015 21:53

Cute for a rabbit. Bearable as a human nickname. Dreadful as an actual name.

Sorry.

afink · 10/08/2015 07:12

I can't imagine an adult Topsy. Well, I can. In my imagination she's an awful, braying PTA running, teacher terrorising woman.

Tansy is lovely, though.

sebsmummy1 · 10/08/2015 07:16

Pmsl. If you love it use it as a nickname.

BikeRunSki · 10/08/2015 07:25

Will she gave a twin brother called Tim?

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 10/08/2015 23:51

The designer and polymath William Morris was nn Topsy, or Top for short......not a name I'd choose for my DC though. Do like Tansy!

BigRedBall · 10/08/2015 23:56

Topsy is a rabbit's name. My pet rabbit was called Topsy. Topsy is not a human name.

auberginefrog · 11/08/2015 13:45

I think it's a nice name but read in a baby name group that it's short for top sail which is what slaves named their babies en route to America thinking they were giving them an English name so not the most pleasant of backgrounds if that bothers you?

Booboostwo · 11/08/2015 14:40

Nice for a pet, no good for a child.

DH and I considered Oopsie for DD but only for fun.

IsadoraQuagmire · 11/08/2015 14:51

Raphaella And, of course, Gabriel Rossetti's wombat!

mathanxiety · 13/08/2015 06:45

Your DH must be tipsy.

matchingmoll · 13/08/2015 15:27

I might be wrong, but I think it's a name associated with the slave trade - a shortening of topsail. So I really really wouldn't.
Even aside from that, I really really wouldn't.

LunaSonny · 13/08/2015 15:36

Oh dear. Pregnancy hormones really can make you go quite loopy...

mathanxiety · 13/08/2015 22:35

The friend and the DH are not pregnant, Luna. They are the ones who think Topsy is a reasonable name.

Shock
Floggingmolly · 13/08/2015 22:40

Well, in the absence of hormones to blame, he's just a fecking diot. And what's the friend doing "suggesting" names, anyway? Ever so slightly over stepping the mark, I'd have thought?

Floggingmolly · 13/08/2015 22:41

Idiot, not diot. Although he's probably that too...

cashewnutty · 13/08/2015 22:47

My best friend had a cat called Topsy. It is not a name for a person.
