I really like Hilda and have liked it for a long time, it has a positive associations for me. I just wondered what general opinions were at the moment (I won't be offended. obviously).

Other names on the list, of those slightly more unusual (so would welcome opinion), include

Augusta
Ursula
Guinevere

Boys names would be Ivan or Percy

Matilda and Tilda are quite well liked, so why not Hilda?

ButtonMoon88 · 23/07/2015 07:09

sorophonia I suppose someone has to be the trendsetter!! Few people on here liked my DD name but it has been mentioned a few times on this thread as being lovely!

capercaillie · 23/07/2015 07:14

I like Hilda!

helentheheron · 23/07/2015 07:25

I actually like Hilda and don't think it is too "out there" or hipster (love that you self identify as one though! Self knowledge is a wonderful thing!). As pps have said it is similar to Matilda (and mn favourite Hester) and I think it is cute (but not too cute) and unusual and strong.

I like Ursula because of the meaning. My childhood alphabet chart also featured an Ursula with her umbrella which might have something to do with it! But if we're talking stereotypes then that could come across as a bit posh.

Definitely Ivan over Percy. I know a few (adult, welsh) Ivan's and they are all great blokes.

dollius · 23/07/2015 07:28

I like Hilda. Can't stand Ursula. Guinevere is too out there. What about Genevieve.?

Wisteria1979 · 23/07/2015 07:37

I like Hilda. It's beautiful and strong. And quite European so works internationally as well.

ExConstance · 23/07/2015 07:42

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hildegard_of_Bingen I've always thought a shortened "Hilde" would be a lovely name.

LadyLuck81 · 23/07/2015 07:44

I like Hilda too. I wouldn't use Ursula because of the sea witch in the Little Mermaid. She petrified me as a kid Blush

I don't love it. Maybe as a middle name incase your dd doesn't like it. I prefer Ursula

ButtonMoon88 · 23/07/2015 08:04

And me ladyluck she was petrifying!!

PolyesterBride · 23/07/2015 08:11

You would have to be hipsters to use Hilda! It will probably mean that your daughter will be able to carry it off as all her friends will be called Zelda, Godfrey, Ian and the like.

Love Ursula though - such a pretty name and in my opinion would work in hipster and non hipster circles!

honeyandfizz · 23/07/2015 08:23

No just no!!

MrsBungle · 23/07/2015 08:27

Ursula and Ivan are nice enough names. Hilda and Percy are truly awful IMO.

waceystills · 23/07/2015 09:10

I love Hilda!

CruCru · 23/07/2015 09:13

I love Hilda. I raised there a couple of years ago and everyone hated it. I also really like Augusta.

CruCru · 23/07/2015 09:14

In the end I went with Claudia which isn't so massively different from Hilda. Agree with PP about Matilda being quite like it too.

Whycantibetangy · 23/07/2015 09:23

Hilda is a beautiful strong name. I love it much more than Ursula (wasnt she the evil octopus thing in little mermaid?)

sausagechops101 · 23/07/2015 09:27

My middle name is ursula after my gm. I absolutely hated it as a kid as little mermaid came out when I was 6/7. Now it's grown on me so much I'm considering using it for dc2. Partly because I think Sula is a really sweet nickname.

MamaLazarou · 23/07/2015 10:22

Aw, I used to have a lovely hamster called Hilda.

MamaLazarou · 23/07/2015 10:23

Ursula Is a lovely name. I don't know why people think the Little Mermaid connection is a bad one: Ursula the octopus is a great character.

RiverTam · 23/07/2015 10:24

Ursula
Ivan

The others are absolutely awful.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/07/2015 11:10

Hilda would definitely be a name used by a self consciously cool couple. The kind of people who picked Ruby 15 years ago.

It is a truly awful name though and would never grow on me.

Augusta, Ursula are all better options. Guinevere is too flouncy.

I like Ivan a lot, dislike Percy a lot.

IsadoraQuagmire · 23/07/2015 14:04

I love all those names, especially Hilda, which is gorgeous. I think of the Eustace and Hilda trilogy by LP Hartley.
I know an Ursula and Ivan in the same family (their dad is Russian, that's the reason for Ivan's name) Never seen The Little Mermaid, so no idea who that Ursula is...

Greenwing · 24/07/2015 13:30

Hilda - plenty of comments here for you to judge others' opinions but it is your opinion that matters.

I have a family member called Hilary, always called Hilly as a pet name (with no thoughts of hills at all in our minds), which could be an option as a diminuitive.
re Percy - do remember that to 'point percy at the porcelain' is a euphemism for boys having a wee which might cause him embarrassment in future!
