I really like Hilda and have liked it for a long time, it has a positive associations for me. I just wondered what general opinions were at the moment (I won't be offended. obviously).

Other names on the list, of those slightly more unusual (so would welcome opinion), include

Augusta
Ursula
Guinevere

Boys names would be Ivan or Percy

I'm sorry but I hate all of your names, especially Hilda which is very ugly.

CakeRattleandRoll · 24/07/2015 14:59

Hilda - can't understand why there are so many negative responses on here, yet Matilda always gets lots of mn love. I'm ambivalent about both of them, but do like nn Hilde.

Augusta - OK as long as she didn't get called Gusty!
Ursula - lovely meaning and has her own constellation, Sula is a sweet nn. Haven't seen Little Mermaid.
Guinevere - very unusual, beautiful and I like the 'legendary' Celtic aspect. Gwen as nn is lovely. But she will be called Genevieve by everyone if they see her name written down before they hear it pronounced - trust me on this.

Ivan - 'the Terrible'? As long as your surname isn't a noun starting with a vowel e.g. Ivan Orange.
Percy - I really want to like it, but can't get past the penis association.

HILDA? You are kidding. Please do not inflict that on your child.

PallasCat · 24/07/2015 19:38

Yes to Hilda, and also Ursula.

Not so keen on Augusta or Guinevere.

I do like August for a boy.

Yes to Ivan, Percy is ok but strongly prefer Ivan of the two.

Good luck! Smile

mathanxiety · 25/07/2015 04:23

I absolutely love Hilda. I like Ursula and Guinevere too, but not as much as Hilda.

I also love (just to give you an idea of where I am, taste wise):
Wilhelmina
Elfrieda
Frida
Greta
Agatha
Aphra
Matilda/Tilda
Willa
Winifred/Winnie
Thomasina
Letitia
Drusilla
Sybil
Theodosia
Dinah

I would choose Ivan over Percy. I also like Ivo and Ivor.

I wouldn't call your names hipster. Hipsters around me have given their DDs names like Beryl and June and Rita. Boys are Linus, Grover, and Franklin.

I would categorise your names as Germanic/Anglo Saxon -ish

nooka · 25/07/2015 04:34

I really dislike Percy, partly because it makes me think of BlackAdder, where Percy was just so incredibly wet.

Hilda I'm not so sure about, but I think could work, it's probably the beginning of the next wave of names generation wise. I don't like Augusta. Ursula is quite cool and I really like Guinevere (love the Crosby Stills and Nash ). I like the nn Gwinny too. I agree it might be a bit of a pain to be a Guinevere though as I suspect it wodul always be misspelled/pronounced. Memorable though and that's no bad thing (I have a similar type name)

mathanxiety · 25/07/2015 04:34

I would use Gustav or Augustine rather than August or Augustus for a boy, and never Augusta for a girl. I think it's too close to 'busty' and too tempting to playground wags.

Do you have a B list? The A list needs ripping up Grin

CruCru · 25/07/2015 10:06

Do you like Hedda (as in Hedda Gabler)? Also nice.

Plus Greta.

LarrytheCucumber · 25/07/2015 19:45

How weird. I was only wondering today if Hilda was due a comeback.
Much better than Edna that's for sure. DM has a group of friends in their 80s called June, Rita, Hilda, Janet and Edna.

LarrytheCucumber · 25/07/2015 19:48

Oh, and Audrey. Forgot her.

RiverTam · 25/07/2015 20:08

Audrey's the only decent name there!

Marshy · 25/07/2015 20:14

Edna and Hilda need to be consigned to history....please don't saddle a child with either if these names.

Diamondsandpears · 25/07/2015 20:25

An alternative Vilde?

PigPlopper · 25/07/2015 20:36

What about Ethel or Maureen? Or variations of.... Hilda sounds quite harsh. Hilde is much nicer... but I can see it being a trendy name eventually.

LarrytheCucumber · 25/07/2015 21:24

Not Maureen, surely.

dotdotdotmustdash · 26/07/2015 09:56

How about Genevieve or Viva for short?

Wailywailywaily · 26/07/2015 10:00

I think Hilda is a lovely strong name to give a girl. One of the better old lady name revivals and way better than Esme or Edith which seem very common these days. Its up there with Freda.

PuppyMonkey · 26/07/2015 10:02

It's a no from me to all of those, sorry. Confused

CruCru · 26/07/2015 10:03

I don't like Genevieve, mainly because I know I don't pronounce it correctly.

PheasantPlucker · 26/07/2015 10:11

I LOVE Hilda!

(My gorgeous Godmother's name)

I won't be having any more children, but it will be the name of our next female pet (whenever that may be!)

YeOldeTrout · 26/07/2015 10:52

Friend is a very cool & trendy Hilda, I agree it takes a confident person to carry it off.

meglet · 26/07/2015 11:00

Hilda is nice. But I do love 'old' names anyway, Percy, Mabel, Arthur etc.

I was in town the other day and there were a couple of cool little girls called Elsie and Nora Smile.
