Aaliyah is not popular where I am from never heard it, I'm considering different spellings such as
Alea
Aleigha

Not a huge fan but so long as you like it, that's all that matters.

Well it just makes me think of the singer who had underage sex with R Kelly Sad

It's up to you

LeoandBoosmum · 22/05/2015 17:01

Not keen but if you like it?

To me, the double Aa looks contrived, and it's probably not, but it sounds very much made up. I think Leah is better, for me, anyway.

LeoandBoosmum · 22/05/2015 17:04

As suitefrancaise says, those spellings are not pronounced in the same way. Plus, they look just as contrived/ made up... You'd be forever correcting people. If you really want it, I'd go with a simpler spelling of the original, like 'Aliya which looks nicer to me'. Most people would know how to pronounce that.

hobNong · 22/05/2015 17:04

I'm not keen on the other spellings, I prefer Aaliyah but maybe because that's the only way I've seen it spelt before. It does make me think of the singer but I don't think that is a problem. To everyone who knows her, it will be your daughters name.

MrsBungle · 22/05/2015 17:05

Joy is a nice name. I'm not keen on Aaliyah personally.

It's beautiful and I would stick with the original spelling.

Belazu84 · 22/05/2015 19:26

Nice. Stick with Aaliyah though- don't mess with the spelling!

WeSailTonightForSingapore · 22/05/2015 19:37

Alyia is an Arabic name and is fairly common in Muslim communities of all backgrounds (Middle Eastern, Pakistani, European).

Can't believe someone up thread said it sounds made up Hmm.

It's a nice name op but not keen on the spellings you propose.

WeSailTonightForSingapore · 22/05/2015 19:40

Oh oops, what I said about someone saying the name sounds made up. Just saw they meant the spelling sounds made up. Sorry about that, my mistake, should read more closely!

PinkSquash · 22/05/2015 19:43

Aaliyah was the singer who died when her plane crashed about 1910 years ago.

I would stick to that or Aliya

parsnipbob · 23/05/2015 08:14

Yep, when I see Aaliyah I just think of the singer...

yesiwouldlikefrieswiththat · 23/05/2015 09:25

I like it, would stick to the original spelling though

Only1scoop · 23/05/2015 09:26

Joy is nice

SirChenjin · 23/05/2015 09:33

I just think of the singer and would imagine you were a fan - esp. if it's a name that's not common in your culture.

Sophronia · 23/05/2015 12:25

I prefer Aliyah

VixxFace · 23/05/2015 12:38

Stick to aaliyah although I find it ghetto.

Stinkersmum · 23/05/2015 12:42

Dead RnB singer who shagged R Kelly. Not something I'd chose.

perfectlybroken · 23/05/2015 12:52

It's lovely, commonly used by Muslims but also sounds lovely with joy.

perfectlybroken · 23/05/2015 12:54

It means lofty or sublime, high/tall in a spiritual sense.

perfectlybroken · 23/05/2015 12:55

Al-Ala "the high" being one of the hundred names Muslims use to refer to God, and I think Aaliyah is the female form of that name.

perfectlybroken · 23/05/2015 12:56

Never heard of the singer!
