"MN names"

A thread on AIBU made me think that there are certain names I see getting a lot of love on MN but never hear in RL

Sylvie
Beatrix
Milo
Sebastien

There are loads more but I can't think? What other names are MN approved?

I know:

Imogen
Milo
Penelope
Genevieve
Sebastian.

Wasn't aware they were 'MN names' and considered obsolete!

Mrsfrumble · 12/05/2015 19:15

Benedict.

All the Bens I know are Benjamins. I even know a Benoit, but I've never met a Benedict.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 12/05/2015 19:15

I know lots of Imogens, and 2 Judes under 1!

bimandbam · 12/05/2015 19:16

I have a Sebastian. And a Francesca.

We are pretty unmumsnetty I think. And my Francesca is 11 almost and was before mn. And my Sebastian was picked without looking at the name boards.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 12/05/2015 19:16

Also know a Cordelia!

Mrsfrumble · 12/05/2015 19:18

I think there are some posters who spend a lot of time in this topic and always suggest the same names because they like them. Which is fine, but I think gives a skewed perspective of what MNetters are actually calling their children.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 12/05/2015 19:19

Elodie

meglet · 12/05/2015 19:21

I know a few sebastians. and a ptolemy.

3luckystars · 12/05/2015 19:23

Ottilie is nearly always rolled out a the girls names thread.

The funniest thing about mumsnet is the nick names, (I like Harriet, nick name Hattie etc.) I am in Ireland and parents don't ever give nick names, actually most parents go MAD if they hear someone messing with their childs name.
The only nicknames here are given by your friends and they are not nice shortened versions of your name!

drinkscabinet · 12/05/2015 19:27

I know someone who has a Sylvie and an Imogen! We all thought Imogen was a bit boring in comparison to Sylvie. I also know a Clara, Francesca and a Beatrix. Personally I love the names and don't think they're that unusual, just nice middle class names.

Ptolemy and Persephone I'll grant you might be a bit rarer/fancier but still within the normal range.

Of course I have children with incredibly rare names, comes of using names from my home rather than English names although they get the MN seal of approval for acceptable unusualness. So I await their appearance on this thread Grin

MamaLazarou · 12/05/2015 19:38

Elodie, Aneurin, Romilly, Clara, Tobias.

Notso · 12/05/2015 19:38

Kit,
Theodore,
Luca/Lucien,
Arlo,
Wilf,
Persephone,
Clementine,
Lyra,
Sadie,
Claudia,

AgentCooper · 12/05/2015 19:55

Ottilie. I had never seen it before I saw it on here. But a woman I know who is the personification of what I think most people imagine MNers to be (very smugly middle class, precious, PITA) recently announced the birth of her Ottilie, NN Tillie. Figures.

When I see people suggesting Hebe and Hecate, I think 'naawwww.' And I can't stand Claudia. It just sounds like the 90s, for some reason.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 12/05/2015 19:57

Actually I think I know at least one of all the names mentioned here, bar Persephone and Ptolemy! DH went to school with a Persephone though.

BabyGiraffeOnIce · 12/05/2015 19:59

Ooo I know a real life benedict, but he's 23.
and a jude who is a 3 year old boy.
Imogen was on my girls name list but it's too popular here :-(

toddlerwrangling · 12/05/2015 20:04

Ooh I know several little Claras, Imogens, Tobiases, Claudias, a Romilly, a Sebastian and a Cordelia! I wonder if their mums are mumsnetters....

I always think of Thea and Lucas as very MN names.

PrincessOfChina · 12/05/2015 20:05

I've got a Romilly and had her before I was a MN regular. Several of our maybes for DS are on here too but he has a name within the top 100.

MadameJosephine · 12/05/2015 20:08

I have friends who have had babies in the last few years called Arlo, Aneurin, Sebastian, Gabriel and Jude.

I used to think Emmeline was only a mn name but I also know a little Emmeline (her sister is Claudia)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/05/2015 20:08

I know a few of each of Benedict , Jude and Gabriel . Older and children .
Never met a Romilly though .

Orangeisthenewbanana · 12/05/2015 20:09

I do actually know a Ptolomy in RL, and a Benedict (shortened to Ben though).

QueefOfTheDamned · 12/05/2015 20:17

I know several Genevieves...all adults though. Named after St Genevieve, I assume, as they are all from traditional catholic families.

An Arlo has just joined DD's nursery. And I think there's a Milo there too in a different group. At least the boys are a bit different...there are so many Lilysbghat they have to be know as Lily-middle name to differentiate between them...and even then there are 2 Lily-Mays.

kavv0809 · 12/05/2015 20:18

Antigone. 'Nn Tiggy'.

The tragic character doesn't seem to put anyone off, it seems a great favourite on the baby names threads. Perhaps some people just want a name that can be shortened to Tiggy.

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/05/2015 20:35

I've never met any kid called:

mable
iris
nell
Doris
persephone
ptolemy
antigone

maximus
Angus
rafe
Rex

despite all of them being suggested on nearly every names thread.

sometimes I think people are just daring others Blush

LorryHen · 12/05/2015 21:19

The names Luna and Lyra feature on here an awful lot

LarrytheCucumber · 12/05/2015 21:26

MrsFrumble I wanted Benedict for DS2, but it was vetoed by DH and our adult children. When he got to Secondary school he had a Benedict in his class (but he would be 20 now).
