Its generational though.

Apollo's peers won't even blink at it.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2015 21:18

Apollo's peers won't even blink at it.

And you know that how?

SoupDragon · 11/05/2015 21:21

brave is one thing. It's not the parent who has to suffer the consequences of being called a daft name.
it's the kid.
why anyone do that to their own babies/children is beyond me

Absolutely.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2015 21:28

Soup, I've had this argument with you once already in the past fortnight. I'm not about to go into it again apart from to say, the variation of names is huge compared to what it was 20 or 30 years ago. Far more is acceptable.

Floggingmolly · 11/05/2015 21:28

Wasn't she a troll, Magenta?

ShatnersBassoon · 11/05/2015 21:38

I couldn't think of anything but Carl Weathers in satin shorts, slathered in baby oil. That's isn't something I want to think of, and neither do most people.

Go for Paolo or Pablo. They're unusual and a talking point while still being identifiable as a given name rather than a stage name.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/05/2015 21:39

Apollo was a Greek god. If you are really seriously contemplating using this name for your son, please please please spend a bit of time reading up about Apollo on wikipedia. He was not a good role model, let's say. None of the Greek gods were.

Geonoacake · 11/05/2015 21:46

I know two gypsy cob horses called Apollo. It's a good name for a horse.

DustyBusters · 11/05/2015 22:07

Nope. He'll be alongside a Rameses and Ptolemy. Both of whom are wishing they were called James or Marcus or something similar. Both in DS's uni group and both wishing for normal names as they get the piss ripped out of them - sneakily mostly - at every job interview they go for.

Floggingmolly · 11/05/2015 22:26

Really, Dusty? So that gives the lie to the constant MN refrain of "of course it's perfectly possible to become Princess Sparkle QC, what's strange about that???"

reuset · 11/05/2015 22:49

Cinemas, theatres, space missions, Greek gods... I can think of many more examples of why it does not make a great name for your average person

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 11/05/2015 22:56

Sorry, if someone said 'Apollo' to me, I would think they were offering me a mint. I love Greek myth, and names, but this is not one of them, personally.

DustyBusters · 11/05/2015 22:57

I would love to see Princess Sparkle QC as much as I would love to see Ptolemy Smith, bricklayer. Quite franky I'd be happy to engage both!

MagentaVitus · 11/05/2015 22:58

No idea Flogging. I'd just read the thread recently and remembered it.

That doesn't make you right. It is still the child who has to be brave, not the parent. Personally, having grown up with joke after joke after joke, I wouldn't be that cruel to someone I supposedly love without question.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2015 11:44

Thinking back over all the children I have known through my DC, there have been many many different and unusual names. None of them have been bloody stupid and "brave" though.

unlucky83 · 12/05/2015 11:48

I thought this was going to be a thread about Halfords children's bikes Blush ....

balletnotlacrosse · 12/05/2015 12:39

To me it just screams of 'REALLY WANTING TO BE different '

gingerbreadmam · 12/05/2015 12:40

I love it. I'm a real housewives of Atlanta fan and always really loved the name. Unfortunately my dp doesn't as I highly suspect its a boy were expecting.

I also like 'mr president' Grin
