Having a boy in August! DH and I both like the more unique/ unusual names which is good because we both work in a profession where the majority of boys names remind us of some unsavoury 'client', shall we say. So since we found out it was a boy any unusual/ unique names we came across we kept a list of- got it down from around 14 to 6 the other day and now a bit stuck again! I love all the names on our list now but do have a favourite- I'm very aware there is a fine line between 'unusual and nice' and 'unusual and celeb wtf' so opinions please! Also opinions/ experiences on popularity welcome!

Reid
Luca
Hendrix
Spencer
Ridley

Argh totally forgot the 6th- list is on DH phone and he's at work! Will add it later- talk about baby brain!!

I really like Hendrix and Spencer

katiebrusby · 08/05/2015 11:35

Spencers my fave, not keen on luca but like all the others too

Laquila · 08/05/2015 11:38

I like all of them except Ridley. You might like Keir?

Does your surname sound better with a shorter or longer name?

IWishIWishedLess · 08/05/2015 11:38

Hmm. These names aren't to my normal taste at all but I can see why you might want to choose them. You seem to like surnames as first names!

Reid- very short and quite unusual. Not my favourite.
Luca- I like this best. An established name but still uncommon.
Hendrix- I'm ambivalent towards this name.
Spencer- Quite like it from your list.
Ridley- not sure how I feel towards this one either. I have only heard of it used once, but I guess it fits the unusual part of your criteria!

I would love to hear the sixth name.

Ranked in order of my preference:

  1. Luca
  2. Spencer
  3. Ridley
  4. Reid

I have no idea where to put Hendrix in my rankings, I have very mixed feelings about that name!

I hope you didn't find my comments harsh. Congratulations on your little boy!

iwouldgoouttonight · 08/05/2015 11:42

I like Spencer best. I know a lovely little boy called Spencer too.

InfiniteJest · 08/05/2015 11:49

Hendrix is fabulous. I also like Luca and Reid, but not a big fan of Spencer or Ridley. Curious to know the 6th name!

LauraChant · 08/05/2015 11:50

I like Ridley best. Not a fan of Reid or Hendrix although I can see where you are coming from. Luca is nice and Spencer is OK. I am intrigued as to what the final name is - obviously not your favourite!

timelyreminder · 08/05/2015 11:50

I like Luca best from your options, then Spencer.

SoupDragon · 08/05/2015 11:51

Luca is my favourite, followed by Spencer.

The others are all various levels of dreadful in my opinion, with Hendrix being by far the worst. If you want to use Hendrix, get a pet.

Aciderwouldbenice · 08/05/2015 11:52

I really like Reid.
Spencer and Luca are not unusual here (north east)
Hendrix seems I little try hard (sorry)

LauraChant · 08/05/2015 11:55

Oh, re popularity I know a baby with middle name Hendrix and an older child called Luca, don't know any others.

Lilydreams · 08/05/2015 12:12

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the honesty and interesting to see varied opinions from love to loathe on some of them!

Laquila- we did consider Keir but it doesn't quite fit surname- it's strange though there doesn't seem to be a short/long fitting rule with out surname- only thing doesn't work is a first name with any/ a lot of 'n's in it as we have 3 in our surname!! So we culled Quinn/ Nixon/ Sullivan etc for that reason!

Can't believe I can't think of the 6th! It's not my fave but doesn't mean it's not in the running it was possibly just added to the list last and so we've not had as much time considering it!

Luca was my original fave but I'm hesitant about people mishearing/ calling him plain old 'Luke'- I'm an 'ella' and have for most of my life answered to 'ella' and 'emma' as people misheard/ assumed Emma and I couldn't be bothered continually correcting! When I was younger my name was rare although not so much now so I have that problem less!

Spencer AND Reid, are you a Matthew Gray Gubler fan by any chance?Grin
I like Luca and Spencer best, though not sure Luca works without an Italian surname.

ragged · 08/05/2015 12:19

I've come around to tolerating it, but really don't like Luca.
Spencer or Reid are ok. is there another family surname you could use, something that has genuine personal meaning for either of you?

VenusVanDamme · 08/05/2015 12:21

Love Luca but only with an Italian surname for me. I don't think it'll be confused with Luke though so if you like it go for it.

I think if you forget one of them you can take it off the list (we did this with a girl name that DH never remembered as assumed that meant it wasn't a favourite).

LorryHen · 08/05/2015 12:26

Luca, spencer and Reid are all nice.

With the others, especially Hendrix, might be work thinking about if it would suit someone who is 50 or 60.

Just because you like unusual names doesn't mean it will suit a child. I'm trying to think of someone my dads age called Hendrix and it just doesn't worry sorry!

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2015 12:40

Luca is my favourite of the bunch, Hendrix my least.

Spencer & Reid - are you a Criminal Minds fan? Grin

BikeRunSki · 08/05/2015 12:43

Luca and Spencer are not that unusual ime.

I like Reid though, but all your names part from Luca are surnames to me.

Sophronia · 08/05/2015 13:10

I love Reid, that's my favourite.

FatSwan · 08/05/2015 13:22

Spencer is my favourite. I like Hendrix too!

Lilydreams · 08/05/2015 14:44

Isadora and Drama- you got me! We are massive criminal minds fans in particular Matthew Gray Gubler!! Haha! Busted! Don't worry though it will be either spencer or Reid if one of those! Not both!

BikeRunSki- yeh I suppose they are quite surnamey sounding but I think that comes from the need for uncommon ones! Or at least when I say uncommon I mean ones we haven't come across in our jobs!

Lorry- appreciate your point but I find that a little like when people say to my DH who has a very artistic beautiful albeit full arm tattoo sleeve 'won't you feel silly when your 80 in a nursing home with tattoos' to which his reply is always 'not really as a large proportion of my generation have them so I won't be alone'! I'm not going to call my child a traditional name for fear of it not being an old mans name- as explained we have a need for unusual names not just a preference and rather like saying 'just because you like traditional names doesn't mean it will suit a child'. Hope that doesn't come across as defensive/ arsey it's not supposed to! Trying to explain where I'm coming from Grin

I like spencer, reid and Ridley.

Not keen on Luca unless you have an Italian surname and definately not keen on Hendrix.

What about Ramsay, Arlo, Seth or Gregor?

Pandora37 · 08/05/2015 14:56

I'd ditch Luca if I were you. It was no. 60 in the stats which isn't too high but Luke and Lucas are a lot more popular and similar sounding. Otherwise, I really like Spencer.

FelixFelix · 08/05/2015 15:02

Reid and Spencer are the best from the list.

Hendrix is really not good!

Luca is ok but I know of a few of them. Not keen on Ridley either.

NKfell · 08/05/2015 15:39

My order of preference would be:

Spencer
Reid
Ridley
Luca
Hendrix

I'm not keen on Luca, like bouncing said, unless either of you are Italian.

Hendrix is...I'm not sure I like it- sorry!
