Having a boy in August! DH and I both like the more unique/ unusual names which is good because we both work in a profession where the majority of boys names remind us of some unsavoury 'client', shall we say. So since we found out it was a boy any unusual/ unique names we came across we kept a list of- got it down from around 14 to 6 the other day and now a bit stuck again! I love all the names on our list now but do have a favourite- I'm very aware there is a fine line between 'unusual and nice' and 'unusual and celeb wtf' so opinions please! Also opinions/ experiences on popularity welcome!

Reid
Luca
Hendrix
Spencer
Ridley

Argh totally forgot the 6th- list is on DH phone and he's at work! Will add it later- talk about baby brain!!

I like Heath, Reid, spencer or Luca. Ridley reminds me of an Oxbridge college, though I'm not sure it is one. Hendrix will always have jimi Hendrix connections, not that it's necessarily a bad thing but people will always comment on it

I like Luca best - all the others are more surnamey than first-namey iyswim. But Luca is a nice name.

FelixFelix · 08/05/2015 17:54

I really like Heath. Also much prefer Hendrick or Henrik. Sorry I didn't realise it wasn't after the musician! It's just what I assumed as I am a fan Grin Plus I've seen a few people call their child Lennon after John Lennon which I think is also very try hard in the same way.

Quasilulu · 09/05/2015 01:09

Really like Hendrick

Yarp · 09/05/2015 07:17

Luca

Also:

Levi
Joel
Saul
Leon

Lilydreams · 09/05/2015 08:22

Yarp- I soo wanted Saul but another one DH said he got immediate associations with Saul Goodman off breaking bad so said no! Even me trying to make him think of Saul off homeland aka Mandy Pantinkin who I love from his criminal mind days didn't persuade him! The others I just don't like sorry!

Heath or Spencer.

Luca is ok though prefer Lucas or Luke.
Not keen on Reid or Ridley or Hendrix.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 09/05/2015 09:25

Arg! Wrote a really long post but my phone ate it!

Basically I like Heath, Hendrick (that spelling) and Luca

Florrieboo · 09/05/2015 09:27

Spencer is our goldfish :-)
I like Heath best, and we have similar taste because we used a name that your DH said no to.
Ridley and Reid don't feature in my son's friends but, all the other names do. Go with Heath, it's lovely.

Snowflake15 · 09/05/2015 09:28

I love Heath and would definitely be on my list if our surname wasn't a well known place name

Snowflake15 · 09/05/2015 09:30

I also like Spencer

Some suggestions:

Blake
Malachi
Asher
Eli

jennyjenny11 · 09/05/2015 09:31

I think it depends on how unusual you want it to be. Here are the England and Wales stats for 2013 (the most recent data available):

*Reid - no.532, 69 born (Reed is no.1462)
*Luca - no.60, 1034 born (Lucas is no.26 and Luke is no.45)
*Hendrix - no.771, 41 born (neither Hendrick or Hendricks charted meaning that there were 2 or less boys born with those name
*Spencer - no.160, 349 born
*Ridley - no.1462, 16 born
*Heath - no.388, 105 born

Personally I like Reid, Ridley and Heath the best, I quite like Hendrix and I am not so keen on Spencer or Luca. Luca will just get shortened to Luke which is fine but not what you seem to be looking for. Spencer makes me think of that guy on Made in Chelsea and is a bit too surnamey. I would think of the short forms and alternatives make and sure you like them as well, if your son goes through an awkward teen phase where he just wants to blend in and wants to be Henry instead of Hendrix would you be happy with that or would Luca to Luke be a better alternative?

crapfatbanana · 09/05/2015 09:33

I think Heath is a quality name. I also like the suggestion of Henrik.

Horatio
Tilo
Rowley
Kane
Kurt

Justnapping · 09/05/2015 10:10

I know 2 babies called Luca. If you are going for unusual it is not so unusual these days

See, when I hear the name Hendrix I think of the actress Elaine Hendrix, not Jimi Hendrix at all. Almost all my favorite music was recorded well before I was born, but somehow I've rarely heard his songs, so it wouldn't occur to me that the name is connected to him.
Elaine Hendrix is a descendant of John Hendrix, pretty cool! Grin

"According to local tradition, John Hendrix (1865–1915), an eccentric local resident regarded as a mystic, prophesied the establishment of Oak Ridge some 40 years before construction began. Upset by the death of his young daughter and the subsequent departure of his wife and remaining family, he became religious and told his neighbors he was seeing visions. When he described his visions, people thought he was insane; for this reason, he was institutionalized for a time. According to several published accounts,[11] one vision that he described repeatedly was considered to be a description of the city and production facilities built 28 years after his death, to be used in World War II.

The version recalled by neighbors and relatives has been reported as follows:

In the woods, as I lay on the ground and looked up into the sky, there came to me a voice as loud and as sharp as thunder. The voice told me to sleep with my head on the ground for 40 nights and I would be shown visions of what the future holds for this land.... And I tell you, Bear Creek Valley someday will be filled with great buildings and factories, and they will help toward winning the greatest war that ever will be. And there will be a city on Black Oak Ridge and the center of authority will be on a spot middle-way between Sevier Tadlock's farm and Joe Pyatt's Place. A railroad spur will branch off the main L&N line, run down toward Robertsville and then branch off and turn toward Scarborough. Big engines will dig big ditches, and thousands of people will be running to and fro. They will be building things, and there will be great noise and confusion and the earth will shake. I've seen it. It's coming"

Lilydreams · 09/05/2015 14:27

Coconutty- nice try but neither of us are teachers! Far from it! Hmm

Isadora- thank you for that it was lovely- I don't immediately associated Hendrix with Jimi either and probably couldn't name you a single song! Glad it's not just me! Certainly gives me food for thought!

Jenny- thank you for those stats- will come in very useful! One of DH current reservations on spencer is just that- made in Chelsea- although I have never seen it or have a clue who he is so didn't bother me personally! If be quite happy if LO ended up Hendrix and wanted to shorten to Henry as I like the name but have a relative (in America) called it so would never use! Have a v. close relative called Luke so wouldn't be as happy if Luca was changed to Luke!

Thanks for the other suggestions guys but not really looking for any more- trying to shorten the list not extend it! Grin most I just don't like but- Elijah, Eli for short was on original list- got crossed off when we realised it was quite popular nowadays and Malachi was always the name I wanted to use when I was younger but it and any variations of it Kai etc are all work related now! Boo!!

Looking like Heath is quite well received and think I'm leaning that way myself- which is weird considering if managed to forget it when I first posted! Will give it time yet though as I don't think in ready to let go of the others just yet!
