Hi. My partner and I have randomly come across the name Eton (or Eaton) and really like it.
The thing is that we want a name that isn't too out there but think the name is strong and will still be taken seriously.
What are everyones thoughts?

My first thought is that you're not from the UK?

I wouldn't.

showtunesgirl · 30/04/2015 21:08

Eton makes me think of the public school and the second also sounds like a place.

What about Ethan?

alzreik82 · 30/04/2015 21:08

Yes we are for the UK.

No. No. A thousand times no.

AlpacaMyBag · 30/04/2015 21:08

Sorry that sounded rude, I didn't mean it like that! Just that no, it sounds aspirational in a really hopeless way. Would go with Chanel or Armani for a girl.

Just my thoughts!

Sophronia · 30/04/2015 21:11

I think it will make most people think of the school.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 30/04/2015 21:12

Posh school - wannabe
or I've had my dinner

alzreik82 · 30/04/2015 21:12

Thanks for your thoughts AlpacaMyBag. Thats why we put it out there! It was just an off the cuff thought. We have another name that we are pretty much 100% on but can't help but keep looking!

No.

People will misread it for Elton which would be annoying.

CrispyFern · 30/04/2015 21:14

No.

alzreik82 · 30/04/2015 21:14

Thanks for the suggestion showtunesgirl. I like the name Ethan, its just a few close friends kids have that name and want something different to theirs.

Eden?

merrymouse · 30/04/2015 21:17

No - All the negative conotations of the school without the benefit of having gone there - and if you did go there it would be rubbish to have the same name as your school.

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 30/04/2015 21:19

Not great. Sounds like "eaten". When introducing himself it would sound too like "I'm eating". Also looks a bit like you wish he was attending the school (Eton).

GerbilsAteMyCat · 30/04/2015 21:19

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eaton%27s
Eaton's was once Canada's largest department store.
Also, it sounds like the past tense of eat.
Ethan?

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 30/04/2015 21:19

Eden is great.

Mrsfrumble · 30/04/2015 21:19

How about Etan? Pronounced Ay-tan, it's Hebrew and means "strong".

Viviennemary · 30/04/2015 21:21

They're both pretty dire. Eaton is unthinkable. But Eton. Well that's a school. I'd have another think. Ethan isn't too bad.

alzreik82 · 30/04/2015 21:21

Oooo I like Eden!

Hoppinggreen · 30/04/2015 21:24

I think of Eden as being a girls name, although I did meet a male one recently.

TheBuskersDog · 30/04/2015 21:28

Eden Is definitely a girl's name.

alzreik82 · 30/04/2015 21:29

Isn't Eden purely a girls name?

OP posts:
Mrsfrumble · 30/04/2015 21:32

... Or Ayrton, which, thanks to Ayrton Senna, most people will know how to pronounce and spell.

purplemeggie · 30/04/2015 21:34

Would go nicely with Winchester and Rugby for boys and Bedale and Rodean for girls Wink

ClashCityRocker · 30/04/2015 21:35

I went to school with a boy called Eden.

He had lovely curly hair.
