Hi everyone,

Thought we'd definitely decided on this but now i'm wobbling.
DP loves the name Kit, I like it a lot and like the fact it's not too popular.. but i'm worried that it's too short and can't be changed/shortened/turned into a nickname..
I'm not keen on Christopher so would definitely put Kit on the birth certificate.
My other favourite is Max (Maximillian) but i'm worried it's too popular...
3 syllable surname so a short first name helps to balance it out.
What do you all think? First baby so no siblings to work with. Feeling the pressure of getting this right..!

I love the name Kit!

longestlurkerever · 01/05/2015 14:58

Yes, don't go down the route of a wholly different name you're meh about on the birth certificate. That way madness lies. None of my name, dd's name and dh's name come with any obvious nicknames but we have managed without "options".

IvoryMadonna · 01/05/2015 16:06

I'm a one-syllable nickname and it's blighted my life. Angry You can't just change your name if others refuse to cooperate. Give the poor child something to work with.

IssyStark · 01/05/2015 16:14

I love Kit as a name but I would definitely have a name on the bc which wasn't a nickname.

ZombieZoo · 01/05/2015 16:18

I don't like it. I've met two baby Kits

AndHarry · 01/05/2015 16:22

I really like it but, as others have said, I would put Christopher on the birth certificate so he would have options later on. No need to tell anyone, just announce him as Kit.

firesafety · 01/05/2015 16:29

I don't like it, because I always think of Kit in A Woman of Substance.

Showing my age now, lol. Blush

perrita · 01/05/2015 16:30

I like the name but wouldn't use it as I would feel like people would know the main reason I picked it is because I'm a little bit in love with Jon Snow Wink

CrispyFern · 01/05/2015 16:47

I like it more than Max!

holmessweetholmes · 01/05/2015 16:58

I love it. Considered it for ds.

RL20 · 01/05/2015 17:16

I like it, it was on my short list Smile. Funnily enough, he is now Max! It's not that popular around here though

longestlurkerever · 01/05/2015 17:30

Gosh ivory that sounds a bit dramatic! Would you feel the same way if your name was a one syllable full name eg Anne? It just seems harsh to me that people always get told off on mumsnet for not using a longer version of a nickname but not for a short name per se though you're equally stuck with it.

ScaryMaryHinge · 01/05/2015 17:35

I love it, it was on my list for a boy. I also like Topher as another version of a shorting of Christopher.

Hoodedmoron · 01/05/2015 17:36

I love Kit, we chose a 3 letter one syllable name and then put the full name on the birth certificate ( as we have a one syllable surname ) not quite sure why really now as We have never called DS by his full name and probably never will. I'd go for it Smile

firesafety · 01/05/2015 17:39

Topher? Never heard that before!

squoosh · 01/05/2015 17:41

There's an actor called Topher Grace. Always thought his named sounded a bit silly.

expatinscotland · 01/05/2015 17:46

It's Christopher. Used to be shortened to Kay or Kye. Bet no one's so keen on that nowadays.

PuppyMonkey · 01/05/2015 18:10

Blighted your life in what way ivory? Grin

ZombieZoo · 02/05/2015 23:04

Sophie Ellis Bexter has son kit

Totality22 · 02/05/2015 23:15

It's a girl's name to me - sorry!

m0therofdragons · 02/05/2015 23:18

I love it - John snow suits it well. I'd also just use it as a name in its own right. I only have girls but it was on our boy list

gg81 · 03/05/2015 15:17

Thank you everyone. I'm 95% sure I'm persuaded. DP is very pleased with all the positive comments, and I know that no name is going to be liked by everyone. I think we're just going to have to wait to meet him to see if he looks like a Kit before we completely decide! If we go for it it will be Kit on the birth certificate for sure, no long names for the sake of it.

My DH is a Christopher/Kit too! Waves at others!

SkodaLabia · 03/05/2015 20:38

Have you seen the new Disney Cinderella, OP? Kit is the name of the prince in that.

gg81 · 04/05/2015 06:37

Damn Disney! Used to really like the name Elsa before Frozen got hold of it. Is the Cinderella film going to create a trend for lots of Kits do you think...?
