What are your thoughts on Joan as a name? I wasn't keen at first but dp is a fan and it is the name of my favourite singer (her of Woodstock/Bob dylan fame). It is growing on me!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SunnyBaudelaire · 21/04/2015 14:08

I like it, due a revival surely, along with Jean.

BunnyLebowski · 21/04/2015 14:08

I'm a big fan of retro names but can't warm to Joan.

Joanie is cute and very Americana though Smile .

piechuck · 21/04/2015 14:16

Lovely name - start the revival!

squoosh · 21/04/2015 14:25

Reminds me of Shakespeare but not in a good way.

Tu-whit, tu-who a merry note
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot

There's always glamorous Joan from Mad Men I suppose but my first association is 'greasy'.

HouseAtreides · 21/04/2015 14:26

I prefer Jean. :)

timelyreminder · 21/04/2015 14:56

I like it.

PennilynLott · 21/04/2015 14:59

Like it but prefer Jean. Joan is an Enid blyton character who's always sad :(

squoosh · 21/04/2015 15:07

And there was Joan Baker in the Chalet School. She was portrayed as a brazen strumpet because she once flirted with a boy, and nice gels did not flirt. In Chalet School land nice gels married their childhood GP.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 21/04/2015 15:18

I know two baby Joan's (one known as Joanie) I think it's coming back!

Unthoughtknown · 21/04/2015 15:38

Hmm was Joan the one who got sent away from Mallory towers in disgrace?

OP posts:
diddl · 21/04/2015 15:45

Not my taste either.

It was Joanie in Happy Days, wasn't it?

Prefer Joanne or Joanna.

IsadoraQuagmire · 21/04/2015 15:49

I learnt this poem when I was little…Grin

What lovely names for girls there are!
There's Stella like the Evening Star,
And Sylvia like a rustling tree,
And Lola like a melody,
And Flora like a flowery morn,
And Sheila like a field of corn,
And Melusina like the moan
Of water. And there's Joan, like Joan.

(I still like the name Joan though!)

Guin1 · 21/04/2015 16:20

I like it (and prefer it to Jean).

meringue33 · 21/04/2015 16:22

I like it. Also Joni Smile

PennilynLott · 21/04/2015 16:59

Joan is Elizabeth's friend in the Naughtiest girl in the school. Eventually they find the reason she's sad is that her brother is ill or dead. #derail

sweetpeame · 21/04/2015 17:38

I don't like it at all. It's a very plain name (and not in a good way!). I would expect Joan to be 50+ and dowdy...

Bonsoir · 21/04/2015 17:40

It rhymes with moan.

TheRealMaryMillington · 21/04/2015 17:42

I like it
And Jean
(and June, and Joy, and, actually, Jane)

It's very simple but it has a nice sound

and I think of Joan Bakewell (who is cool as fuck and utterly beautiful) as well as Joni.

Grin

Have you passed the Joan baton on to a daughter Dixie?

Stinkylinky · 21/04/2015 17:55

Love Joan. It's was my grandma (and favourite person in the worlds name!) if our baby was a girl, Joan would be on the name list. SIL has just had a little girl with the middle name Joan

princessdave · 22/04/2015 14:22

I like it - was my grandmothers name so a little biased!

Agree with a poster upthread, like Jane, Jean, June and Joy.

Had planned to use Joy as a middle name for DC2 as DH wouldn't entertain Joan. We had a boy so it didn't matter but I now have a long list of future cat's names! Grin

mewkins · 22/04/2015 14:25

I like Joni and also Johanna (as in Visions of..)

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2015 16:08

I don't like it, sorry. I don't like Jean either.

Joni is OK, and Johanna is lovely.

larnieperty89 · 22/04/2015 16:11

Joan the moan Confused

Not a fan in afraid. Joanie has potential & Jean is super cute

Good luck finding the right name can be a killer but I don't ever think you really know the baby's name until they're born then usually you just know Grin
