I'm loving the name Vada at the minute but worries people would pronounce it Vahdah instead of Vaydah.

Other spellings I've thought of are:

Vayda
Vaida
Veda

What do you think?

I'd pronounce it Vay-da. Like in My Girl. Wow thats a flashback to teenage years!

88blueshoes · 23/03/2015 21:17

I'd pronounce it Vada, like RADA. I don't really like it whether it's pronounced that way or the Darth Vader way though, sorry Sad

plannedshock · 23/03/2015 21:17

Yep vay-da as in my girl.

Qwebec · 23/03/2015 21:51

I don't think of Star Wars, I think of the indian scriptures. I'd write it Veda.

Tubbytimmy · 23/03/2015 21:54

I love it.

Gillian1980 · 23/03/2015 22:17

First thing I thought of was My Girl.

ThreeQuartersEmpty · 23/03/2015 22:19

This is Veda. It's bread. Yummy toasted with real butter.

Vada, how would you say it and what other spellings would be acceptable?

Vada Saltenfuss was my first thought. Don't think many kids will get the reference though and they definitely will get the darth one. Best not.

Littlemissjt · 23/03/2015 22:23

My girl was my first thought.

I'd say Vah Dah too.
Vaida looks like Maida Vale gone wrong, unfortunately
Vada reminds me of a serial in Mandy which I think was about a girl called Valda who was immortal or something like that!

flowery · 24/03/2015 08:42

In the playground at school kids won't think of My Girl or bread, they'll be doing heavy breathing and saying "I am your father".

SamanthaAndSamaris · 24/03/2015 08:53

I would pronounce it Vah-da

I would probably pronounce Vaida or Vayda to rhyme with spider.

If I wanted Darth Vader, I would probably spell it Veda (still ambiguous though as could be Veeda) or Veida.

PretzelPrincess · 24/03/2015 08:58

I'd say Vahda. It means 'big' in another language Hmm I didn't make the Star Wars connection though

florascotia · 24/03/2015 09:06

Veda (Vey-dah) is an Indian name meaning 'knowledge', and, as PP said, the name of ancient scriptures.

Vida (Vee-dah) is an east European name meaning 'life'.

Before the film, Vada seems first to have been made popular by romantic novelist Barbara Cartland as the name of one her heroines. It was possibly based on the name Valda, which was made up in the 20th cent from a German word meaning 'ruler'. If that's true, Vada would be pronounced 'Vah-dah'.

Vada is also a well-lnown Indian word meaning 'savoury fritter'....

GobblersKnob · 24/03/2015 09:13

I have know two Vedas and never thought 'Darth'. It's a very pretty name.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 24/03/2015 09:16

Yep, My Girl was my first thought too. Star Wars didn't occur to me until I clicked on the thread.

I really like it actually. Though that may be because I loved the film as a child.

CaptainFabulous · 24/03/2015 09:20

I love love love LOVE Vada!

DH vetoed it, but it's very lovely.

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/03/2015 12:16

I'd pronounce it Varda. Never seen My Girl, so don't get the reference.
I used to know a girl named Veda, (pronounced Veeda) though...

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/03/2015 12:17

Oh, I've never seen Star Wars either (but I HAVE heard of Darth Vader!) Grin

nauticant · 24/03/2015 12:21

I'd pronounce it as vah-dah so rather than making me think of Darth it would make me think of Polari.

SunnyBaudelaire · 24/03/2015 12:23

Darth Vada

sweetpeame · 24/03/2015 12:30

First thought was My Girl Smile. And I'd pronounce it Vay-da as in the film. In saying that a lot of people probably won't get the My Girl reference, think the film was out in the early '90's?! I wouldn't have associated it with Darth Vader but maybe it depends on your accent. I'm Irish and would pronounce the "r" differently than perhaps an English person so it would sound different to Vada.

worksallhours · 24/03/2015 12:33

I would think it was pronounced VARda.

Vayda - would say VEY-da

Vaida - would say VaEDA

Veda - would say VEEda

squoosh · 24/03/2015 13:04

I thought of the character in My Girl too. I'd never make the Darth Vader connection as I pronounce his name as vay-durr, not vay-da.
