We have decided to name our daughter Aria/Ariya but we are unsure on how we will spell it (pn A-ree-a) We prefer the sp ARIYA but are thinking people may mispronounce it? Which sp do you prefer and would you pn them bith as A-REE-A? x

I'd pronounce Aria as A-ree-a but might possibly pronounce Ariya as a-REE-a.

Ariya is unnecessarily fussy.

BlueStarsAtNight · 12/02/2015 13:18

My first instinct was to pronounce Aria as "Ahh-re-ya" (as in an opera), and for Ariya I would guess "A-rye-a".

BunnyLebowski · 12/02/2015 13:18

Arya as in Stark.

Don't like your two spellings.

atticusclaw · 12/02/2015 13:20

I think however you spell it you'll have it pronounced Arya "AH ree a" due to Game of Thrones

I actually think Arya is much nicer.

squoosh · 12/02/2015 13:21

I still think Arya might turn out to be a psycho baddie.

Wash your mouth out squoosh Angry .

She's going to become even more badass and get some shit sorted back in Westeros. Hurry up GRRM!!!

Sorry for the hijack OP.

sonniebonnie · 12/02/2015 13:25

I'd pronounce them excactly the same: Ah-REE-ah.

ScaryChicken · 12/02/2015 13:25

I would pronounce both the same. Slightly prefer Aria spelling but both are nice

gemma19846 · 12/02/2015 13:26

Arya is a different name and pn x

Don't count on it Bunny, I see her heading down a daaaaaaark path.......

Murphy29 · 12/02/2015 13:35

I'd go with Aria. It just looks odd to me with a y.

I thought Arya in GoT was Ahr-ya

gemma19846 · 12/02/2015 13:44

Arya is are-ya, Aria is a-ree-a its a different name/meaning and pronounciation x

Laquila · 12/02/2015 13:50

I'd pronounce Aria in between Ahh-reeya and A-reeya.

I definitely prefer spelling Aria to Ariya.

When I read GoT I always pronounced Arya as I would Aria, but in the telly series they seem to say it both as Arry-ya and Are-ya.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 12/02/2015 13:52

Aria is actually a Persian name for a boy. (Although it sounds more like a girl's name).

flowery · 12/02/2015 13:56

Aria I'd pronounce like the Italian musical term, AH-ree-ya with the emphasis on the first syllable.

Ariya I'd probably hazard a guess and pronounce it a-REE-a with emphasis on second syllable.

gemma19846 · 12/02/2015 14:05

Yes we would pronounce it--- a (like lower case A) not ahhh. a-ree-a. The more i think about it the more unsure and confused i am x

AmIUsingMadeUpWords · 12/02/2015 14:08

Aria I would pronounce like the musical term -AH-ree-uh in my accent.

Ariya I would probably pronounce like Uh-REE-yuh or Uh-REE-yah. Or possibly even ARRY-ah or ARRY-uh. Basically I wouldn't have a clue Grin

gemma19846 · 12/02/2015 14:18

Oh my lord i thought this was such an obvious name even if we spelt it slightly different ??Maybe its an accent thing too? Im from manchester and i would say it short and quick- a-ri-a x

OP posts:
gemma19846 · 12/02/2015 14:19

Yes like arry-uh i suppose

OP posts:
yomellamoHelly · 12/02/2015 14:20

Aria is emphasis on first syllabul.
Ariya is emphasis on second and third.
Given how you want it pronounced would go for Ariya.

gemma19846 · 12/02/2015 14:26

Why would aria be pronounced ahhhria when it starts with just an a not ah? This confuses me too?

OP posts:
flowery · 12/02/2015 14:37

Because it's an Italian word.

atticusclaw · 12/02/2015 14:38

You just need to accept that whether it seems right, this is the pronunciation that you will get at the moment with Game of Thrones being so popular. You will also have people assuming you've chosen it because of Game of Thrones.

eachtigertires · 12/02/2015 14:39

Aria - a-ree-a
Ariya - a-rye-a

NimpyWWindowmash · 12/02/2015 14:41

like an aria from the opera? is that a girls name? Did not know.

Aria would be Ah-ree-ya for me in terms of pronunciation.
