Bee-uh-triss here too (London)

mathanxiety · 10/02/2015 16:50

Bee-uh-triss.

TywysogesGymraeg · 10/02/2015 16:54

Bee-a-triss here.

Murphy29 · 10/02/2015 16:58

Bee-triss, my accent definitely wouldn't add an 'r' where there isn't one

Sophronia · 10/02/2015 18:49

Bee-uh-triss for me, but I know one who pronounces it 'beet-triss'

gemsyll · 10/02/2015 19:42

Maybe she's from Ireland, Squoosh. Wink

It's a sort of ber-uh-triss there, depending on the region.

myotherusernameisbetter · 10/02/2015 20:00

Bee ah triss for me - Scottish (not West Coast but general generic Scottish accent and I have no idea why as I was brought up in Edinburgh Confused )

squoosh · 11/02/2015 10:42

Well I'm from Ireland but I've never heard ber-uh-triss.

Tisiphone · 11/02/2015 11:07

I'm Irish - 'BEE-uh-triss'. I have never heard of 'Ber-uh-triss' in any region.

I have a French goddaughter who is 'Bay-a-TREES', and I believe it's 'Bay-a-TREE-chay' for Italians.

gemsyll · 11/02/2015 12:20

Course you are, Squoosh.

Fattycow · 11/02/2015 12:22

bay-a-trees

squoosh · 11/02/2015 12:25

'Course you are, Squoosh.'

??

flowery · 11/02/2015 12:28

Beer triss

treaclesoda · 11/02/2015 12:46

I'm also from Ireland and have never heard of Ber-uh-triss.

I'm also Grin at the idea that Squoosh doesn't know where she is from. Silly Squoosh.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 11/02/2015 12:49

Bee-ah-trice

Thumbwitch · 11/02/2015 12:50

Bee-uh-triss here. I had one living next door to me - that's how she pronounced it too.

Thumbwitch · 11/02/2015 12:53

I believe the "Irish" jokey thing is to do with someone on here claiming to be Irish but not being Irish. There was a thread. I can't remember which one, it got a bit weird, and something about someone saying they were Irish but not being so, but no names mentioned. I dunno.

Anyway...

treaclesoda · 11/02/2015 12:54

Ah, sorry then. That was me being out of the loop with a joke then.

As you were Smile

CarlaVeloso · 11/02/2015 12:54

It's a tricky name. I know two little Beatrices and they are pronounced differently. One is Beer-triss, the other Baya (like Bay tree) triss.

squoosh · 11/02/2015 13:04

Silly me indeed treacle!

I got to the bottom of it. There's an ongoing thread about protecting your identity on MN. Gemsyll mentioned that she's 'worried' for someone she knows in real life who hasn't done a very good job of concealing their identity and has only changed one detail about themselves, their nationality, and apparently even that's been done 'sloppily'. So it's me, running around MN exposing my identity to all and sundry and pretending to be Irish.

Except she's wrong. Hmm

Tisiphone · 11/02/2015 13:32

I love the idea of people putting all details of their personal lives on Mn, then thinking 'Uh-oh, better throw in a false lead in case anyone recognises me - I know, I'll pretend to be Irish!'

Of course I am a Serbian Orthodox Monk, posting from my monkish cell in downtown Belgrade.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 11/02/2015 15:13

My dh's niece is called Beatrice. We pronounce it "Beat" (as in drum) and "Rice" (as in the food). But that's not how her parents pronounce it . . .

Choccyhobnob · 11/02/2015 16:15

Beer-triss (but then I'm from the South East so don't have a rhotic accent - is that the right phrase?) so I wouldn't sound the R in the middle but it would just be 2 syllables Beer-Triss rather than the 3 syllable Bee-uh-triss.

Does that make sense??

CarlaVeloso · 11/02/2015 17:16

Lorelai I must confess I always think Beat Rice too!

(Not the prettiest name in the world)

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 11/02/2015 18:23

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Luckily we can call her "Bea" when her parents are around, which I think is lovely!
