Gilbert Louis
Gilbert Stanley
Henry Gilbert
Henry Hugo

That's the current shortlist. Last name is single syllable. DS1 has a french first name and scottish middle name. Trying for something non-standard but classic, not too heavy weight, too posh or too earthy iyswim

What's the verdict?
Any other suggestions?
TIA

Gilbert is too posh. He'd be ridiculed by non posh people.

Henry is great :)

bouncingbelle · 20/12/2014 21:45

And despite what I just said about Gilbert, Henry Gilbert sounds fabulous together!

LetTheRiverAnswer · 20/12/2014 21:52

I like Henry and Gilbert. Henry is a much safer choice, but I know an awful lot of baby Henrys, so I'd say its very much a standard name. Would you shorten Gilbert to Gil, which I think can be a name in its own right? I quite like that, softens it a bit.
As for being 'posh', I suppose it is, but maybe it wont seem so much so to this generation with other 'bert names becomming more popular-I've met two young Alberts and a Herbert recently.

Blanketontheground · 20/12/2014 21:54

Gilbert Louis is great - he will be an inventor or an adventurer!

shoobidoo · 20/12/2014 22:04

Gilbert is great and so much more interesting than Henry. Very cool name imo!

No idea what is posh about it... surely any name becomes its owner and not vice versa.

VixxenPlusAllTheOtherReindeers · 20/12/2014 22:09

Stanley Louis

Gilbert is terrible. Really bad.

saffronwblue · 20/12/2014 22:14

Love Gilbert ! (Anne of green gables fan). Gilbert louis or Henry Gilbert both very strong and cool names.

moxon · 21/12/2014 06:28

I like Henry Hugo. Goes well and sits strong with a single syllable surname e.g.
Henry Hugo Smith
Henry Hugo John
Henry Hugo Reed
Henry Hugo Fox
Henry Hugo Lloyd
See.... Works! :)
Henry Gilbert would be a good runner up too.

ilikemincepie · 21/12/2014 06:39

Gilbert was on our list for DC3 but she was a girl. Great, uber-cool name. Gil is a fab nickname, as is Bert. Henry is a bit popular round here. Gilbert Louis, but only if pronunciation of Louis is Louie! Think 'Anne of Green Gables', you doubters!

burgatroyd · 21/12/2014 07:15

I know a Bertie as he isn't ridiculed. Hmm

Gilbert is fab. I know u wanna go for that name, op! You're just wondering if its too out there! (Its no more out there than the Montys, Huxleys and Edgar's out there.

Now if the name was Dilbert...Xmas Shock

ilikemincepie · 21/12/2014 07:18

Oh please don't get me started on Edgar, it was my forbidden name for DC1...

Nospringflower · 21/12/2014 08:01

Not keen at all on Gilbert - I think of it as a 70s geeky name. Henry Hugo best but semi- posh Grin

Rinkydinkypink · 21/12/2014 08:03

I like Gilbert but I suspect your ds won't thank you for it.

Henry is better, Gilbert or Hugo for middle name is fine as well.

Hedgehogsbuzz1 · 21/12/2014 08:06

Just adore Gilbert!!! It's far from 70's, it's a classic chic old man name and really underused. I like Stanley as a middle name but Louis just seems to roll better. There's also Lawrence Laurence which is similar - so I'm putting forward

Gilbert Laurence

Henry is boring Grin

Hedgehogsbuzz1 · 21/12/2014 08:11

I know lots if Henry's/Harry's

Bowlersarm · 21/12/2014 08:19

Gilbert is awful.

Henry Hugo.

Edmund?

YellowPink · 21/12/2014 11:01

ohh interesting responses.
i know a Gilbert and he is uber cool - teenage son of a close friend so that's my main reservation for using that. DS1 has an unusual but traditional name with which it goes well (but all the others do too)
another close friend has recently had a Laurence/Laurie so that's out though i do love it.
Gilbert is alliterative with our surname which would make him GG which i'm very tempted by.
Yes we would use Gil as a nickname as the other boy we know is Bert and it's very much him and Louis would absolutely be pronounced in the french manner not as Lewis.
Thanks particularly to Blanketontheground who may well have persuaded DH with your response x

catsofa · 21/12/2014 11:29

I like Henry Hugo best, it's great.

Gilbert is a fabulous name!

Gil is really cool as a nn too. You can't move at our school for Henry's - nice as the name is!

EightFiftySix · 21/12/2014 15:16

Gilbert is truly lovely! My grandad's name and overdue a return.

Gilbert Louis.

BlueberryWafer · 21/12/2014 15:17

Henry Gilbert gets my vote Smile

squoosh · 21/12/2014 16:48

Gilbert is horrendous, even Gilbert Blythe struggled to carry it off.

Call him Henry.

loislines · 21/12/2014 19:11

Oooh Gilbert is on our shortlist too and I love Gilbert Lawrence so might have to steal that!

Gilbert sounds good with Stanley or Louis too.

Izzy24 · 21/12/2014 19:14

Gilbert Louis or Lawrence really great names!
