Stanhope

I'd be grateful on any views on Stanhope for a boy.

Currently expecting DC3. DH dismisses all my name suggestions and says, if it is a boy, it will be one of this three suggestions...

I'm very non-plussed about two of those and hate the third. Might be able to change his Stanley (nn Stan) to Stanhope, like the Newlyn artist.

I'm not usually a fan of surnamey-names and our other DC have more common names.

Thanks!

My Dad's cousin used to have a caravan in Stanhope. We used to visit and play on the stepping stones across the river

Makes me think of Posy Simmonds' ageing lothario Stanhope Wright. Your husband cannot be serious!

Bluestocking - I was going to say the same thing! If you can remember Posy's very perceptive cartoons, you can't take the name Stanhope seriously .... Possibly this won't be an issue for younger Mumsnetters.

I agree that Stanley is cute but Stanhope please don't burden your child with such a name.
I wouldn't mind if it was a a risky but nice sounding name. It's just awful, sorry!

It sounds a bit American to me. It falls into the "Grayson" category, but worse.

Stanley and Stanhope are both awful IMO! Stan is an awful nn too!

What are the other names Dh suggests? What are your names that Dh dismissed?

Makes me think of Journey's End I'm afraid. Although Stanhope was a good character in that at least.

Did this name come up on downton on sunday by any chance? I added it to my boys list with nn stan

I quiet like it and seen as lots of 'granny/grandad chic' names are on the rise this name may yet be popular.

Isn't that the gay best friend in sex and the city? Stanley is streets ahead.

Another one who instantly thought of Posy Simmonds obnoxious character!
Not at all keen on Stanley and/or Stan either.

I've only heard it used as a first name in the Posy Simmonds cartoons, with Stanhope Wright leering at his secretary, despite having a much younger second wife.

Depends how many people remember those cartoons I suppose, but at least four Mumsnetters do!

The only Stanhope I know is a street. I really don't like it, sorry. Don't like Stanley wither, though.

Your DH is being a dick though. Tell him no and find a compromise name.

It reminds me of 'The Barchester Chronicles', and neither of the male Stanhopes had much to recommend them. I like Stan, though.

Stanhope street, a grim terrace of small houses in a rainy town

There's a Stanhope in Journey's End, though it's his surname - very sad, damaged character and I'm afraid would but me off, town asides! Stan/Stanley is nice though.

Don't love Stanley but at least it's a name.

Stanhope is awful. Sorry.

What were the other two names?
