Name for the little Snowdrop!

Regular here with a name change as I'm mentioning my real surname.

So we're having another little northern bastard (GOT reference Wink) and we've just discovered she'll be a little girl! We had boys names all sewn up but we're floundering a bit with girl's names.

So we need something that goes with the surname Snow (no place names to avoid sounding like a weather report and anything that sounds yellow should be avoided. Summer is also out.)

We prefer classic names and names that aren't too flowery. I'm not big on most of the granny names that are so popular at the moment either. Something that can be taken seriously if she wants to become a surgeon or judge but not too harsh or heavy.

Names currently in consideration are:
Rachel
Elizabeth
Felicity
Harriet
I also love Charlotte, but am concerned that Charlie Snow sounds like Cocaine Cocaine. Could I avoid this by going for Lottie as a nn right from the start or is it just asking for trouble?

Suggestions and comments requested please!

Oooh, I read the title and thought Snowdrop was the first name you were going to choose, that would have been lovely. Why did I not think of calling dd Snowdrop?? She would make a perfect Snowdrop.

Other than that I liked Harriet Snow best till I saw Meredith. Meredith Snow is fab.

BellMcEnd · 21/10/2014 06:55

I like Rachel and Miranda. Just realised I was at school with a Rachel Snow. She was very nice. Penelope Snow is also great. I agree with pps who are jealous of your surname. It's fab!

sleepingbeautiful · 21/10/2014 07:00

I've always been an Elizabeth fan, but so dislike Liz. Liz Snow is meh, and don't really know any adults who survived without getting it shortened (though 2 are Beth) which is fine. The other thing is if she gets married one day and decides to change her last name, Elizabeth "Smith" might seem a bit dull after such a fabulous name as Snow.

Erm...

Wouldn't Harriet Snow sound like Harry Ate Snow? Sorry. Probably best to avoid Juliet too.

I love Elizabeth Snow - Libby if you use a nickname.

Nooooooooo woollyback!!!! Retract that immediately!!! Say it ain't so!? Surely the emphasis in Harriet makes it unlikely?

I agree about the snow eating. Sorry.

Also Lucy Snow/e is a miserable girl in a Bronte novel isn't she? Villette?

I LOVE Phoebe Snow. Meredith is nice.

What about:
Polly
Jeannie
Catriona
Kathleen
Emma
Letit :o

MrsJonSnow · 21/10/2014 08:34

Ygritte is pretty wonderful Grin not sure Dh would go for it. But of course, he knows nothing Wink

Oh Woolly - you are a genius with the mind of a 12 year old bully - very helpful when naming a child!! I'm normally very quick to pick on these potential issues but that one snuck past me!

I agree that Elizabeth isn't so fab when it's not paired with Snow, but if my name was Elizabeth Snow I think I'd keep it when I got married! Worth keeping in mind. I'm not big on Liz either, but Lizzy is a bit better, I do like Bess, Libby is a bit meh, Bea is ok, I also know and Elizabeth with the nn Bizzy which was quite fun.

There are some other great suggestions on here that I have to pass on due to family double-ups etc. (Alice, Susannah, Vivienne etc)

I do like Penelope but it is suddenly extremely popular around here, so a bit worried it will be a bit over-done. I love Poppy as a nn.

Lucy is Dh's secretary so that would feel a bit odd for me!

Soooo, I think Rachel is still a leading contender, along with Felicity and Elizabeth.

Just wanted to point out that Lucy Snowe (admittedly with an 'e') is a heroine, of sorts . . . I'm not sure I'd choose her as a good role model, either!

Takver · 21/10/2014 09:26

Sorry, just saw Xpost with Elephants

Choccyhobnob · 21/10/2014 11:30

I think Phoebe, Emily, Clara and Emma go beautifully with Snow.

Also Diana and Miranda which you mentioned before. Could you have a little Dido Snow for a nn when little?

moxon · 21/10/2014 15:16

Could you have a little Dido Snow for a nn when little?

Or Didi?

Yorkshirelassreturns · 21/10/2014 18:38

Please pick Felicity. The most beautiful name and it works really well with a simple sounding surname. I love the nickname Flossie! Congratulations x

DilysMoon · 22/10/2014 13:24

I really like Elisabeth Snow with the softer 's' sound. Also Thea Snow sounds nice.

MrsJonSnow · 29/10/2014 07:13

I'm back!!
So we were narrowed down to Rachel and Elizabeth, but now DH has thrown a spanner in the works by suggesting Sasha/Sascha.

What do you think?

I'm a bit torn as I know it is originally a nn, but all the female Sashas I know are just Sasha.

Elizabeth is wobbly due to lack of a nn we can agree on, and because I know she'll rarely actually be referred to as Elizabeth, and the nns just feel a bit second-rate by comparison. Does that make any sense?

moxon · 29/10/2014 07:35

Sascha Snow. Hmm. Not sure. School Assembly call-out test?
I'm currently thinking you should choose Vita. :)
