Name for the little Snowdrop!

Regular here with a name change as I'm mentioning my real surname.

So we're having another little northern bastard (GOT reference Wink) and we've just discovered she'll be a little girl! We had boys names all sewn up but we're floundering a bit with girl's names.

So we need something that goes with the surname Snow (no place names to avoid sounding like a weather report and anything that sounds yellow should be avoided. Summer is also out.)

We prefer classic names and names that aren't too flowery. I'm not big on most of the granny names that are so popular at the moment either. Something that can be taken seriously if she wants to become a surgeon or judge but not too harsh or heavy.

Names currently in consideration are:
Rachel
Elizabeth
Felicity
Harriet
I also love Charlotte, but am concerned that Charlie Snow sounds like Cocaine Cocaine. Could I avoid this by going for Lottie as a nn right from the start or is it just asking for trouble?

Suggestions and comments requested please!

Moxon you'll have to enlighten me Blush. What's the assembly call-out test?

I like Harriet and Felicity
agree totally about Charlotte :(
Shame about Mathilda

What about
Megan
Millicent
Melissa
Emily
Marianne or Marianna
Bethany
Melody
Amelie

Legionofboom · 29/10/2014 12:33

I like Sasha as a name but I'm not keen on Sasha Snow.

Agree that Elizabeth is much nicer than most of the shortenings. I do like Libby and Beth but none of them sound as great as Rachel Snow.

Cuppachaplz · 29/10/2014 12:40

I like Harruet and Felicity.
Totally agree about Charlotte :(, and Jo Snow

How about
Angela
Megan
Miriam
Marianne/Marianna
Amelie
Melody
Millicent
Phoebe
Bethany

I know you have Alexander as a middle name, but Sasha can be a nickname for Alexander/Alexandra, so you could do Alexandra Elizabeth Snow? Alexandra Snow is really nice and doesn't all roll into itself. Then have Sasha has a nickname. You can sort of use two names at the same time. DD is Alexandria, known 90% of the time as Alex but her longer name is used regularly too. So I imagine at school she might be registered and known as Alexandria X, rather than Alex X.

assembly call out test:
School assembly and DC gets called out by name to come on stage and receive prize/gets made example of/does interpretive dance. Will it sound really weird when called out loud? Will it make DC feel a bit embarrassed? Will it make other kids giggle or think of new nicknames because it is "noticeable" when echoing across a school hall full of children of various ages?

Guin1 · 29/10/2014 15:25

The 3 or 4 syllable names sound best with Snow. My favourites from earlier suggestions are Elizabeth Snow, Miranda Snow, Marianne Snow and Miriam Snow.

mathanxiety · 29/10/2014 15:29

Of the three currently under consideration, I like Rachel. It's a classic name and I think it goes really well with Snow.

MrsJonSnow · 30/10/2014 00:26

I agree. I think Rachel might be the winner here.
I loved Harriet, but can't help wondering who Harry is and why he ate the snow.

I don't think Sasha would cause assembly issues - it's not embarrassing or anything, but somehow it just doesn't sit quite as well. I think Dh just thinks it's a bit "cooler" or something. Not to worry - he changes his mind with his underpants.

Thanks for the other suggestions. It think it must either be my age but some of them just sound very 80s/90s to me (Bethany, Melody etc) and some are just a bit to dated to my era (Melissa). Marianne is a bit too 60s for me.

I do love Alexandra, but somehow it just feels "taken" due to the middle-name thing. I know that's a bit silly, but this will be my only daughter so I just can't bring myself to do it.

THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING!!

Thoughts, opinions and suggestions still gratefully accepted!

Tell me if I'm missing a trick!

Just a thought... Eirlys? It means snowdrop. Congrats by the way x

moxon · 30/10/2014 04:32

Yes, pity about Harriet. I still don't think it would be a big issue for me! :)
The Assembly call-out test is more about how it sounds than expressly embarrassing interpretations. Clunky, weird, awkward, difficult follow-on sound that people in such situations could stumble over. :)

MiddletonPink · 30/10/2014 09:43

Harriet Snow.
Perfect Smile

MiddletonPink · 30/10/2014 09:46

I wouldn't worry about the Harry ate snow thing. How often do you use your full name? Harriet is gorgeous.

Madeleine Snow?

TobyLerone · 30/10/2014 09:51

Meredith Snow.

moxon · 30/10/2014 11:55

Yay for a last-minute Harriet Snow comeback! Halloween Grin

MiddletonPink · 30/10/2014 12:05

I have images of little Harriet Snow in my mind.
All bundled up in her lovely winter coat.

It has to be the one of the prettiest names ever.

Looks beautiful written down and sounds fabulous.

Valentina Snow is also wonderful

hat34 · 30/10/2014 15:25

Personally I don't like Elizabeth, I think it is staid and unremarkable.
I don't normally like Harriet, but it sounds good with your surname, and Hattie (or even Harry) are nice nn.
Otherwise I would suggest
Emily
Beatrice
Edie
Ella

Pandora37 · 30/10/2014 20:27

I'm not sure about Sasha Snow. Sounds a bit like a cartoon character or a description of something (a sash of snow. Maybe I'm just too critical). It seems very different to the style of your other names.

I think Rachel or Felicity are your best bets. Felicity Snow sounds elegant and pretty whereas Rachel Snow sounds a bit more no nonsense and sensible.

MrsJonSnow · 30/10/2014 21:37

Oooh, I don't want to get too hopeful about the Harriet thing - not sure I'll be able to get it past DH now that I've pointed out the snow-eating issue.

I used to work for a company that sold this Christmas card. It was a very popular one and I really liked it, until a little boy pointed out that it looks like the Christmas tree is up the cows bum.

Will Harriet forever be tainted in my mind like the bovine-enema-card?
