Fleur

AWombWithoutAFoof · 14/09/2014 17:05

Fleur can only be pronounced one way surely? I can't see what pronunciation problems there might be.

It rhymes with fir, fur, and blur.

squoosh · 14/09/2014 17:07

It's because it has such a soft ending, the urrrggh part can go on a bit when said by some people.

RunnerHasbeen · 14/09/2014 17:17

It is an accent thing, in some parts of country blur does sound like bleugh. No amount of correcting will change that. As you like it, you are probably somewhere it sounds nice so I wouldn't worry too much.

I just went for a lovely long walk with dh and discussed names. We are back to Luna. But also added Ivy to the list BUT I don't like the popularity of it, I think it may be heading for top 10. Really don't want anything super popular.

Also thinking of Astrid....

Luna or ivy. I don't like fleur - sounds like bleeeurgh (which I pronounce differently to blur - Scottish).

MrsBungle · 14/09/2014 18:28

Astrid is lovely

nwthree · 14/09/2014 18:29

I like Fleur (though prefer Flora, if that's an option for you). Luna is gender neutral I think, which may cause problems.

MummyBeerest · 14/09/2014 18:29

Luna is gorgeous. No one will have trouble pronouncing it.

I love Ivy and don't know any.

MerryMarigold · 14/09/2014 18:56

I like Luna. I head a Rhoda today and I loved it.

ODearMe · 14/09/2014 18:58

Fleur

Loz1975 · 14/09/2014 22:01

Sorry op, had a busy weekend. Always had a positive reaction. Anyone I've met has always said what a lovely name. I can't re call any pronunciation problems except a few of my elderly aunts in Ireland always say it wrong but that may be more to do with the accent. All her teachers have always pronounced it correctly. I still think its lovely and suits her very well. No other name worked for me once I'd heard it.

bakinggood · 14/09/2014 22:31

Fleur

xXjunebugXx · 14/09/2014 23:03

Both names remind me of Harry Potter, but that is a great thing imo! I have Ginny on my list :)

I think I prefer Fleur but I do love Luna too. Both lovely names.

squeak2392 · 15/09/2014 03:33

I've always loved Luna.

When I was little I hated the name Fleur with a passion. I think because it sounds like 'urgh' (sound of disgust/vomiting). Not half so bad now though. Still don't really like it, but I wouldn't hate it if I heard it.
I'm in love with Flora though.

butterfliesinmytummy · 15/09/2014 03:44

My dog is Luna, she gets called Lulu.....

MerryMarigold · 15/09/2014 11:56

Love Astrid. And Claudia.

AWombWithoutAFoof · 15/09/2014 16:05

Astrid is gorgeous. Unless you live in a place where they say 'ass' instead of 'arse'.

poppydaisy · 15/09/2014 16:07

Luna is much prettier imo. Beautiful name.

satsumasunrise · 15/09/2014 16:11

Luna-tic, do not lumber your child with this name op.

fairyteepee · 15/09/2014 19:49

Luna!

mirandabee · 16/09/2014 13:00

Luna is a lovely name.

Not too keen on Fleur

Italiangreyhound · 17/09/2014 02:28

Fleur is beautiful.

Sadly, although I like the sound of Luna, I think people/children may say 'lunatic'.

Luna is a lovely name. As you know it is moon in Latin, and a number of romance languages.

?????? is the Greek word for moon, it is pronounced Selini/Seleenee - just a thought! Not recommending it, I just tried it on Google translate and loved the sound of it!

translate.google.co.uk/#no/el/Moon

But with that kind of name a child is constantly having to spell it out! My kids have unusual names (I did not think them so unusual at first but am constantly being asked to spell them and it does get tiring to hear them mispronounced or see them spelled wrongly!)
