Aubrey (for a girl)

it's a name I've loved since I was a teenager and heard the Bread song but the fact that one of the Teen Moms has an Aubrey really put me off. now i'm thinking it's lovely and teen mom won't be around for much longer (please god!).

I think it was traditionally a boy's name but sounds feminine to me.

thoughts?

NO - just no.

MrsSpencerReid · 26/08/2014 15:36

Love it, she spells it aubree so that makes it ok Grin not the same name at all!!!

AuntieBrenda · 26/08/2014 15:36

I really like it. I watch teen mom
But not many people do do I don't think anyone will say anything about that - so what if they did ? It's a lovely name. Was in my list but dh doesn't like it.

PisforPeter · 26/08/2014 15:37

It's a lovely name but it's a mans name.

ralinax294 · 26/08/2014 15:38

I really like it and even though I have watched Teen Mom I didn't think of it until you said it so I don't think it would be a problem.

ArsenicyOldFace · 26/08/2014 15:39

Disclaimer: Don't know the song. Or know who the teen moms are (I assume american teenage mothers of some sort though? Grin ).

It sounds very much a boys name to me. People are likely to think they have misheard 'Audrey' aren't they?

OneLittleToddleTerror · 26/08/2014 15:41

Don't know teen moms or the song. But it's a boy's name.

babyblabber · 26/08/2014 15:44

the line from the song is "and Aubrey was her name, a not so very ordinary girl or name." so nice!

i'm a bit worried that maybe it's only a girl's name in America, when googling baby name sites it comes up far more often as a girl's name (some saying a French name?) but most of the sites are american. so pretty sounding to me though.

A version of Auberon/Oberon. Not a girls name.

curiousgeorgie · 26/08/2014 15:47

I really love it for a girl... The teen mom connection wouldn't bother me at all.

Kantha · 26/08/2014 15:49

An old man in 'Last of the Summer Wine.'

AuntieStella · 26/08/2014 15:49

It's a boys name to me.

Tangoandcreditcards · 26/08/2014 15:56

Good name, friend of mine has an Aubrey; but he's a boy, because it's a boy's name, sorry.

Tangoandcreditcards · 26/08/2014 15:57

Meant to add, nothing wrong with an androgynous name - but think it would be akin to a boy/man called Vivian or Lyndsey

Flossiex2 · 26/08/2014 15:59

I know one Aubrey - male, 70s.

MagpieMama · 26/08/2014 15:59

I love the name, it does make me think of Teen Mom but it wouldn't put me off using it.

buttercrumble · 26/08/2014 16:01

It seem quite a masculine name to me , not quite right for a girl

atticusclaw · 26/08/2014 16:05

Its a boys name. Don't you like Audrey?

babyblabber · 26/08/2014 16:14

hate Audrey.

see it seems it's very much a boy's name in England but everywhere else (well according to google!) it's a girl's name.

and i'm in Ireland so think I can maybe get away with it.

Blueuggboots · 26/08/2014 16:21

I know an Aubrey and he's a 60 year old bloke. And there's a butcher called that too.
I know someone who called their DS Sasha.....great in Russia, not so good here!!

ArsenicyOldFace · 26/08/2014 16:28

Ah maybe in Ireland you'll be ok Smile

It does sound as though it should be a girls name, but I wouldn't use it in england myself.

Wikipedia seemes to agree with you re US en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey

Askance · 26/08/2014 16:36

I'm in Ireland and I know an Aubrey - a man in his mid-thirties.

Pandora37 · 26/08/2014 16:56

I know a 1 year old girl called Aubrey and I'm in England, I think it's starting to become more 'unisex' over here. I'm not that keen on it myself though, for either sex.

Notso · 26/08/2014 17:06

I don't know why because it's not my usual type of name but I love Aubree for a girl I first heard it on Teen Mum.

I do know one man called Aubrey, he is in his 60's but he is quite possibly the campest man I have ever met. He hasn't really made the name seem masculine for me IYSWIM.

PuppyMonkey · 26/08/2014 17:10

Anyone else find it odd that you can hate Audrey but love Aubrey - only one letter difference.

And everyone will think your DD is called Audrey - she'll probably have to suffer that all her life. Grin
