Aubrey (for a girl)

it's a name I've loved since I was a teenager and heard the Bread song but the fact that one of the Teen Moms has an Aubrey really put me off. now i'm thinking it's lovely and teen mom won't be around for much longer (please god!).

I think it was traditionally a boy's name but sounds feminine to me.

thoughts?

Going even further back, Auberon and Oberon are forms of Alberich, an old Germanic name. A male name.
In German mythology, Alberich was a dwarf who guarded royal treasure.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/08/2014 17:21

I know two adult female French Canadians, but have it spelled Aubree.

Also a US colleague has named her daughter Aubrey, she has Germanic roots.

I like it for a Girls name.

Sophronia · 26/08/2014 17:41

It's not my usual style but I do actually like it! I definitely prefer it to Audrey, which I'm really not keen on.

I prefer the spelling Aubrey.

Sophronia · 26/08/2014 17:43

Just to add the one Aubrey I know in real life is a man in his late 70s.

ellenjames · 26/08/2014 17:44

It's a boys name! Think of the poor child.

Sophronia · 26/08/2014 17:45

It was used 38 times for girls last year, and 35 times for boys, so it seems like a unisex name in the UK.

chemenger · 26/08/2014 17:47

It's a boys name, there are plenty of girls names, why the need to take a boy's name? It doesn't seem to happen the other way round for some reason. Will we get to the point where there are girls names and names but no boys names?

WowserBowser · 26/08/2014 17:50

See, i love Audrey but don't like Aubrey!

slithytove · 26/08/2014 17:55

Female character out of pitch perfect

squoosh · 26/08/2014 17:57

Boys name.

alemci · 26/08/2014 17:58

was Aubrey Sebastian's older brother in Brideshead Revisited?

not keen on it for agirl, sounds too masculine

mommathatwearspink · 26/08/2014 18:00

I really like it for a little girl!

HaroldLloyd · 26/08/2014 18:02

The teen mom one was Aubree I think, though I think it's a lot more popular as a girls name in America?.

Not that I watch teen mom, you understand Blush

squoosh · 26/08/2014 18:13

My favourite Teen Mom baby names are Leah's daughters Ali and Aleeah.

Imaginative.

HaroldLloyd · 26/08/2014 18:19

I like Janelles mother. JAAAAANNNEELLLLEEE JJJAAANELLLLLEEE no wonder the poor kid went off the rails with all that screeching.

NadiaWadia · 26/08/2014 19:47

Wouldn't choose it, as it is definitely a boys' name (although a rather girly sounding one, I will admit - so I wouldn't choose it for a boy either).

Audrey is lovely (and a proper girls' name). How can you object to it so much, when it is just one letter's difference?

babyblabber · 26/08/2014 21:04

No idea why one letter makes such a big difference but Audrey is terrible compared to Aubrey in my head!

I am Irish and if you use it in Ireland people will think your baby is a) a boy and b) British, or trying to be so!

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 26/08/2014 21:15

Never heard it for a girl. I have known men called Aubrey but they were old and are gone now.

d and b are just mirror images of the same shape, if you call a girl Aubrey people will probably think she can't say or write her name properly (or that you can't)

squoosh · 26/08/2014 21:27

Grin Haroldloyd, God yes! All that 'JAAAAANNEEELLLLLE-ing would drive anyone to drugs and dodgy boyfriends.

aubreye · 27/08/2014 10:06

My name is Audrey but I always get called Aubrey, which is a boys name.

curiousgeorgie · 27/08/2014 11:07

I agree that Audrey & Aubrey are completely different to me babyblabber... No offence to any Audrey's but I hate it, it makes me think of ladies having a shampoo and set... Aubrey I love. And I would never think that someone had spelt their name wrong...

manicinsomniac · 27/08/2014 11:56

I love Aubrey. Only for a girl though.

In America it's really popular as a girl's name (top 50 at least I think) but unheard of for a boy. In the UK it's rare for both boys and girls.

It's much more recognised as a girl's name by younger people now (Pitch Perfect, lovely YA book called 'Love Aubrey')

I would go for it. I also don't like Audrey, which is weird. So similar.

GooseyLoosey · 27/08/2014 12:03

Boy's name to me.

Legionofboom · 27/08/2014 12:07

I know Aubrey is a man's name but it does sound quite feminine to me. I don't like it for male or female tbh.

I agree that Audrey and Aubrey are quite different. I think lots of names that are just one letter apart are very different. Julie and Juliet are poles apart to me.
