Hi everyone,
Me and OH have finally came to an agreement - the name Lilia!

I just wondered what everyone's thoughts on the name were and how everyone would pronounce it?

Also whether people prefer the spelling Lillia or Lilia?

The middle name we like is Poppy - paying tribute to his GM.

I would pronounce it like Lily with an 'uh' on the end.

I think it's ok as a name. I prefer spelling with one 'l'. It does my eyes in with 2!

freyaW2014 · 12/08/2014 22:40

Pronounce Lily-uh and spell Lillia I can't read it with one L in middle! It's pretty

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/08/2014 22:41

I'd pronounce it lil-ee-ah.

I think Lilia is the usual spelling, I preferring it. Lillia looks like n has been missed off Lillian.

temporaryusername · 12/08/2014 22:43

I love it! I am really not sure about which spelling is better though.

Sophronia · 13/08/2014 01:08

Lilia is the usual spelling, and looks much better. I like the name and prefer it to Lily.

Coughle · 13/08/2014 01:39

I prefer one l.

burgatroyd · 13/08/2014 05:09

Its OK. I prefer one L.

florascotia · 13/08/2014 09:53

It's Russian, and can also be spelled Liliya.

Both versions only one L.

There's a famous ballroom dancer with the same name, I think.

CallMeACab · 16/08/2014 15:26

Your OH's grandmother is called Poppy?

storytopper · 16/08/2014 15:40

There used to be a make of sanitary towels called Lilia - 1970s or so.

You may get a few comments from older people but that shouldn't worry you if you like the name.

There was a previous thread about it:

ChickenMe · 16/08/2014 17:34

It's a nice name. A nod to the very popular "Lily" but more unusual. Think it is Russian? I would spell it with one L. It could be short for Liliana.
I remember the towels but I'm 38. I wouldn't have thought of the towels unless it'd been mentioned.

Jumblebee · 16/08/2014 17:46

Lily-a

And I think it's beautiful, really unique Smile

Fullpleatherjacket · 16/08/2014 18:10

'Fraid my first thought was the towels but I am old enough to remember them well. I don't think many would make that association these days though.

I would pronounce it Lily-a.

florascotia · 16/08/2014 18:21

It's not unique. It's uncommon, but there were literally dozens of babies with the name (various spelling) in 2013:

MrsWinnibago · 16/08/2014 18:25

I like two Ls because one looks a bit like Lila.

Lila
Lilia

Yes, I wondered about the sanitary towels - and I'm a MAN!

And, Yes to the ballroom couple (saw them 'live' a few years ago:

(They were our favourite couple!)

Umbrellasandladders · 16/08/2014 19:35

I've heard if a few lately but it's lovely.

bethellex · 16/08/2014 23:29

She's called Pauline, her nickname is poppy :)

And thank you all for your comments, I have heard about the sanitary towel thing but doesn't really concern me :)

florascotia · 17/08/2014 08:09

OP are you telling us that she's arrived? If so, congratulations!

I was at school with a really nice girl calld Pauline. For me, it's a name with good associations.

YellowStripe · 17/08/2014 08:26

I think the OP means the grandmother is called Pauline!

florascotia · 17/08/2014 09:12

Sorry!

ZeroTolerance · 18/08/2014 10:45

Aren't you worried people will hear Lily or Lillian?

missmargot · 18/08/2014 10:49

Lilia would have been DS's name if he had been a girl, inspired by my grandmother Lily and my great grandmother Lilian. I pronounce it Lily-uh.

birdofthenorth · 18/08/2014 15:30

It rings of sanitary products to me too I'm afraid, and I too young to have used that specific brand of towel.akes me think of Lillets. Sorry.
