I have mixed opinions from friends & family on this name ... I love it as it not so popular in my area and i am nursery teacher so finiding it hard to pick a name that i dont associate with other people's little cherubs!!

Are you/will DD be black or dark-skinned? If yes, it's not too bad. If she's likely to be blonde with blue eyes, avoid!

STIGZ · 06/08/2014 12:40

She will probably have blue eyes & brown hair like her sister ? But who knows for sure as my dd was blonde for 2 years and now completly brown headed

I think it sounds nice but in my head it is more of a name for a lovely black horse, sorry!

ElephantsNeverForgive · 06/08/2014 12:52

I rather like it. Yes in one way it would be odd for a very fair DD, but only to people who don't know her well.

DD has a couple of friends with flower names, who are tall, sporty and not in the least 'flowery' if I joke about it DD just looks Hmm it's never crossed her mind, they are just friends.

In any case, have you ever met a bright red, Scarlett or a yellow primrose.

Leeds2 · 06/08/2014 13:16

I like it.

My only concern would be people constantly singing Ebony & Ivory to her, but maybe that is just me!

ACM88 · 06/08/2014 14:04

I don't like it, it sounds quite harsh to me when I say it out loud. I imagine a really arsey teenager, don't know why?!

UnrelatedToElephants · 06/08/2014 14:22

Beautiful - I really love it. Somehow manages to be soft and strong at once.

UriGeller · 06/08/2014 14:24

Ah very topical!

Onesleeptillwembley · 06/08/2014 14:28

Oh dear. I've encountered one. And heard of a couple of others. One had a sister called Chantelle and a brother with one of the names ending in 'don' with a mullet. Another was of a similar ilk, and one was deeply regretted by her lovely parents once they had met a few other Ebonies.

alliemarg · 06/08/2014 14:41

I like it - maybe consider Eden as well?

AmITwirly · 06/08/2014 15:12

Don't like it. Sounds like the name of a pet to me.

Mind you, at least you are planning on spelling it correctly. I once met a little girl called Ebbonnie...which definitely put me off.

Can I suggest some similar names for you to consider?

Elodie
Eloise
Xanthe
Erin
Erica

ralinax294 · 06/08/2014 16:14

I really like Ebony, go for it!

CPtart · 06/08/2014 16:30

I know one (9). Dislike the name, and far too similar to all the Ellie's, Ella's, Eva's, Ava's, etc etc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/08/2014 19:42

Don't like it, sorry.

hollie84 · 06/08/2014 19:44

I've met a fair Ebony and thought it was a bit of an odd choice tbh. I quite like the name though.

Gingerjv · 06/08/2014 19:55

I donot like this name sorry.

toobreathless · 06/08/2014 20:48

Not my thing but nothing wrong with it. Perfectly nice name and I like that it feels strong yet feminine.

Out of interest WRT colours I have a 'Hazel' who is bright red headed with green eyes.... Bit of a shock as we are both brown haired.

toobreathless · 06/08/2014 20:50

I really cannot see how Ebony could be seen as similar to Ellie/EVa/Ava personally.

Elodie and Elouise are lovely suggestions from twily

peppinagiro · 06/08/2014 22:03

Elodie is NOT like Ebony, thank you very much.

I don't like it at all. I've met a couple of toddler Ebonies, both blonde, fair little girls, and it struck me as being really odd.

Mumof3xox · 06/08/2014 22:05

Ebony is lovely

But also think would seem odd on a fair child

Eden is lovely too, I agree elodie not much like ebony tbh

hollie84 · 06/08/2014 22:05

I can definitely see the Elodie/Ebony similarities, they have the same kind of feel.

Showy · 06/08/2014 22:12

Of course Elodie and Ebony have similarities. Three syllables, same stress, start with the same letter, end in ee.

I know an Ebony. Blonde hair and blue eyes and from a lovely family. I think of her tbh so Ebony is a well mannered, kind, quiet girl from a big, welcoming family. I like it.

STIGZ · 06/08/2014 22:30

Thanks for all opinions .. I dont really feel that strongly on the colour association, i dont think i have heard anything being described as "ebony" in colour? Just as i dont think of the names "scarlett or rose" just suited to red heads. I think elodie is quite similar to ebony but i dont like elodie as much as it sounds to similar to "melody"

TeaAddict235 · 06/08/2014 22:35

Ebony is a nice name. I think of outdoorsy girls with horses and large gardens. Go for it. Smile

toobreathless · 06/08/2014 23:37

Of course there are similarities between Elodie and Ebony peppingrio do you have an Elodie perchance?
