I have mixed opinions from friends & family on this name ... I love it as it not so popular in my area and i am nursery teacher so finiding it hard to pick a name that i dont associate with other people's little cherubs!!

Ebony=black for most people. Just google it, you'll get the song and Ebony magazine as results.

cindydog · 07/08/2014 00:04

I dont think it is a nice name.Sounds like a Jerry springer guest name.

looki · 07/08/2014 10:34

Would you call a black girl Ivory?

Both are awful.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 07/08/2014 10:39

I am not keen.

It's quite tough to name your child a 'marmite' name because you might find that adults who really dislike the name assume they won't like the child either and aren't As friendly/kind as they might otherwise be.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 07/08/2014 21:12

You can't call a white girl Ebony.

Trollsworth · 07/08/2014 21:14

The only Ebony I know is ginger. It's not a good name for white girls tbh, but then Melanie is supposed to mean Dark, and everyone has forgotten that.

brokenhearted you're being mean.

17leftfeet · 08/08/2014 07:59

Of course you can call a white girl Ebony -how ridiculous

I don't follow MN name trends

Names are viewed differently in different areas -you would get lots of raised eyebrows locally if you called a child Elodie!

As long as it's a classic spelling and you and your OH like the name then go for it

winkywinkola · 08/08/2014 08:01

I don't like it. Sorry.

winkywinkola · 08/08/2014 08:02

But I'm not sure if there is any point in canvassing opinion like this.

maggiethemagpie · 09/08/2014 11:07

maggiethemagpie · 09/08/2014 11:08

What's the porn connection? Porn with black girls/men?

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 09/08/2014 11:29

Yes, ebony porn is with black actors.

MamaLazarou · 10/08/2014 16:40

All wrong for a white child, IMO.

I know two white Ebonies.

DeadSirius · 11/08/2014 19:57

I would really say no.

I don't particularly like the name as it is. But if your daughter is white, I would definitely not use it. I'm surprised, going by this thread, that it's considered ok in the UK. At the least, it wouldn't travel well - if she ever went to the US it would be considered offensive.
