first name for middle name Lilian/Lily

Me and my OH are expecting a little girl at the end of august. He has chosen his late nana's name which is Lilian for the middle name but because he called her Lily, baby's middle name will either be Lilian or Lily. I'm struggling to find a name that goes with it as a first name. Every name I mention my mother in law pulls the I hate it face. Help please I'll take any suggestions

First of all, ignore your mother in law! Best not to discuss baby names with anyone other than OH I reckon , until baby arrives and then you just announce the name.

Lilian and Lily are lovely. I think most first names would go, except ones with lots of L sounds maybe (for example Holly Lilian is a bit of a tongue twister). But that still leaves loads. If you want a first name that ends in -y or -ie then choose Lilian.

What sort of names do you like?

I really like Sophia also older names like Violet and Evelyn. I prefer Lily over Lilian

Lillian was a distant relation's middle name too (think grandparent's generation). Her first name was Clarice, pronounced Cla-REESE, I think it's more french that way?

Anyway, I thought it was a lovely name.

IMHO, something with three syllables would sounds pleasing..... it's not easy trying to find a name to satisfy everyone, though.

It would help if you posted a few names you like to give us naming gurus some inspiration, please... and also will you ever be using the full name out loud, apart from the whole "Samantha Lillian, will you please get down here NOW" type of application.

I like the older type names like Evelyn and Violet. My OH isn't fussed what I choose just aslong as her middle name is Lilian or Lily. My own mum voices her opinion every now and again but my mother in law is worse I prefer to just keep the names to myself. I was thinking maybe Sophia Lily or Matilda Lily thank you for all your suggestions so far ?? her last name will be Chaytor x

I know its round the other way but my younger sister is called Lily Pearl (she was born on the Pearl ward) which I have always thought is very pretty.
Good luck, its hard naming a person, it took us a g e s to decide on a name for our boy bump which is also due the end of Aug.

Isabel/Isobel goes well with Lily or maybe Eliza or Elizabeth

Not a big fan of Charley and it doesn't really fit your earlier brief, but I wouldn't say that it doesn't go. Charlotte Lily sounds nice but I wouldn't get hung up on how the names go as aside from the first couple of weeks, you will never say them together.

I think soon makes a very good point. You say you like older names names like Evelyn and Violet (I like Violet, also Violetta). I think both are very nice OP. Alice is a lovely name. Perhaps the choice between Lily and Lilian depends on your surname? If you have a short surname, eg Smith, then Alice Lilian Smith sounds good. If your surname is longer or double barrelled, eg Robinson or Smith-Jones, then perhaps Alice Lily Robinson or Alice Lily Smith-Jones flows better.

I see you put your surname in one of the posts above OP - I think Alice Lilian goes really nicely but either sounds fine.

Beth is also nice and if you choose Elizabeth then you could have Beth or Eliza, Liza/Lisa, Libby or loads of other choices if you feel that Beth doesn't suit.

...or you could have Alicia (Pronounced Aliss ia or Aleesha) Lily?
