Considering Laurie - but...would he get 'Loz'? Any experiences?

I really like Laurie, and don't think it's much used. Is it short for Laurence?

rachel234 · 07/06/2014 12:16

Laurie is a girls name to my ears, short for Lauren or Laurence.

For a boy I'd choose Lawrence or Laurent (male version of Laurence).

lljkk · 07/06/2014 12:40

I know a British boy Lawrence/Laurie (almost 15yo). Names are what we make them.

I never heard of Loz before.

Montsti · 07/06/2014 13:06

I assumed it was for a girl at first...but as far as the nn. Loz, I've only heard Laurens referred to as that.

Why don't you call him Lawrence/Laurence nn. Laurie..

survivingsummer · 07/06/2014 13:21

DS is Laurie and has never been called Loz! He's Laurence officially but has always been known as Laurie. We get a lot of comments about it being a great name! I love that it is fairly rare although I do know 5 other boys called Laurie so maybe becoming a little more popular Smile

AWombWithoutARoof · 07/06/2014 13:26

The only Loz I know is a Laurence. Or Lawrence, can't remember which.

squoosh · 07/06/2014 13:49

The only Laurie I know is male but he does get a lot of post address to Ms Laurie XXXX

squoosh · 07/06/2014 13:49

Oh and he's never called Loz!

devoncreamtea · 08/06/2014 09:10

Thanks folks! Like the name, but haven't chosen yet. Wouldn't do Laurence if intended to use Laurie - would just cut to the chase! Thanks for your comments.

I wanted Laurie but my DD is names for a Little Women character so I couldnt possibly use a LW male name too.

Im contemplating Lawrence or Leo as possible alternatives.

skolastica · 08/06/2014 10:50

I have a DS Lawrie, never called Loz as far as I know. To me, it's a really strong name.

badtime · 08/06/2014 11:00

Corus, 'Laurence' is a girl's name in France. I think it is a bit strange that people do seem to go on about that - I've never heard anyone say you can't use 'Andrea' for a girl because it's a boy's name in Italy!

I much prefer the 'u' spelling in a given name, as I think 'Lawrence' looks like a surname.

We knew a male Lawrence-who sadly passed away the beginning of May aged 83.He was sometimes called lawrie but we called him Lol. Our dc affectionately called him lollypop.

gemmal88 · 08/06/2014 11:49

If my son had been a girl he would have been Laurie, I love it for a girl but not keen for a boy.

looki · 08/06/2014 13:37

I like Laurie for a boy but really dislike the name Lauren or Lori for a girl. Strange how the mind works.

Laurence, like Florence, look feminine to me (yes, I know they are girls' names in France).

For a boy, Laurent or Lawrence works better imo.

Haha thats what I have! (Not even short for anything). Lawrence is higgmh on my list so I asked an English Teacher friend what she thought of the name and she didnt make the connection so I figure you can get away with it Grin

survivingsummer · 08/06/2014 15:41

It is bizarre, I would never have considered not calling my DS 'Laurence' because it's a female name in France!!

Round these parts there is a strong connection with the poet and writer Laurie Lee whose centenary it is this year Smile

furrlinedsheepskinjacket · 08/06/2014 15:43

ds is Lawrence but is also called lol.

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 08/06/2014 19:06

My nephew is Lawrence and very occasionally gets called Laurie. I think Larry is a nn for Lawrence too (although maybe more N American) and def not to be confused with a girl. I quite like Loz, I know a male one.
I grew up in Italy and the nn for Lorenzo is Lollo which is cute.
