Hi - pregnant with third DC, gender unknown. Horrendously sick and thinking of names lessens it!

We have two girls with long names which we shorten to nicknames ending in "ie". So I think our third should avoid that, but I like classic names that can be shortened.

DH and I agree on very few names... I love more flowery names like Esme and Francesca which DH hates.

So it would be along the lines of current DDs being a bit like Katie, Lizzie AND....

Megan (Meg)
Eve (not keen on Evie though)
Gemma
Clarissa (Clara)
Helena (Nell)
Alexandra (Alex)

Hamish (mish?!)
Harris (Harry)
Frederick (Feddie)
Alexander (sandy)

We have strong Scottish connections and Danish... We live in an area where not many kids have names like tarquin, if that makes sense!

Any other suggestions or criticism or praise gratefully received.

I like Helena with the nn Nell and Freddie!

devoncreamtea · 01/06/2014 21:26

I love Megan for your girls list.

Hamish for your boys list.

oohdaddypig · 01/06/2014 21:27

Thanks - Megan and Hamish are my current favourites but I'm hormonal and possibly not thinking straight :)

Like all your boys names but honestly your girls names are very boring to me. Actually Clarissa is okay but hate Clara.

Etah · 01/06/2014 21:29

Helena&Frederick

Navybluetutu · 01/06/2014 21:30

Sorry feel a bit mean. It only matters what you think of the names. We all have different tastes!

oohdaddypig · 01/06/2014 21:32

That's ok navy - I asked for honesty!

Where we live, Clarissa would already raise eyebrows. It shouldn't matter but I don't want DCs to feel out of place. And I prefer dull names - they shouldn't date.

I love Megan, also spelled Meghan (although not sure if that changes the pronunciation for you).

Meg is a cute nickname but also strong sounding. Goes well with your other girls.

Hamish is popular but a lovely strong name also.

Just remember one mnetter's boring is another's salt of the earth.

Love Helena nn nel

Like Alexander but nn Zander/Xander?

Other Scottish traditional

Angus/Fergus nn Gus

janie2 · 01/06/2014 21:33

Oops just noticed you have Harris!

Alita7 · 01/06/2014 21:34

I would say Clara or Clarice not Clarissa, Alexandra or Alexander :)

RabbitSaysWoof · 01/06/2014 21:36

Love Harris but tbh its so much nicer than Harry to me I would never change it to Harry.
Also have you thought of Cameron for a girl? (think Scottish may be wrong?)
love Lachlan at the moment too for boys.

janie2 · 01/06/2014 21:38

I know a girl Camryn as an alternative spelling!

KissMyFatArse · 01/06/2014 21:40

Mirren? X

oohdaddypig · 01/06/2014 21:41

It's a personal thing but I don't like boys' names for girls!

The only thing putting me off Harris is that our surname starts with "s". It's a plain Danish name, a bit like Smith.

Is Harris Smith not a mouthful - first name ends in same first letter of surname?

DH thinks no, but I'm not sure...

We already have a Lachlan, alistair, Cameron, fergus and Angus in the (large) family. Probably outing myself but we live in a smallish central Scottish town - loads of these names around :)

Viatrix · 01/06/2014 22:35

I like Helena (Nell) and Alexander (Sandy) the best from your list.

soontobeslendergirl · 01/06/2014 23:10

I like Helena or Alexandra from your girls list and would suggest Eleanora (Nora) Anastasia (Tazia) or Jessica (Jess) though my favourite for a girl at the moment would have to be Lorna

I like all the boys names but most give you the "ie" sound again!

How about Gregor/Greg, Murdo, Callum or Euan?

Suttonmum1 · 01/06/2014 23:23

OP, this is the very first names post I have seen in all my years on mumsnet where all of the names are ones I would be Ok to use for my own children.

Congratulations!

Do not be swayed by others, your choices are great.

OK, just reread the post, perhaps not Clarissa.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/06/2014 23:33

I like Helena and Eve.

For some reason, I'm not keen on Alexander, but love, love, love Alec. It is my never going to happen DS2 name...
