Hi - pregnant with third DC, gender unknown. Horrendously sick and thinking of names lessens it!

We have two girls with long names which we shorten to nicknames ending in "ie". So I think our third should avoid that, but I like classic names that can be shortened.

DH and I agree on very few names... I love more flowery names like Esme and Francesca which DH hates.

So it would be along the lines of current DDs being a bit like Katie, Lizzie AND....

Megan (Meg)
Eve (not keen on Evie though)
Gemma
Clarissa (Clara)
Helena (Nell)
Alexandra (Alex)

Hamish (mish?!)
Harris (Harry)
Frederick (Feddie)
Alexander (sandy)

We have strong Scottish connections and Danish... We live in an area where not many kids have names like tarquin, if that makes sense!

Any other suggestions or criticism or praise gratefully received.

Just wait until you're in the throes of labour and insist to your DH that she's Francesca whether he likes it or not!

My daughter is Francesca (Frankie since day one!) and it's the most perfect name; can be modern and trendy or classy and traditional.

looki · 02/06/2014 00:29

My favourites from your original post are Clara for a girl and Alex for a boy. Not a fan of Harris but like Harrison which could also have the nn Harry?

I really don't like Evie or Megan.

Guin1 · 02/06/2014 04:26

My favourites from your list would be Megan/Meg for a girl and either Hamish or Harris for a boy. The only Hamish I know has nn Hame. I think Harris is great as is - don't change it to Harry!

Amybabygypsyqueen · 02/06/2014 04:55

Love Clara or Helena.

Really dislike Megan. Boring boring boring.

Eve is pretty but way overused these days.

skinmysunshine · 02/06/2014 06:10

I like Helena and Megan in your girls's names. Hamish and Alexander in boys (love the nn Sandy)

PunkAssMoFo · 02/06/2014 07:42

Love Clara on its own & Helena.
Hamish or maybe Harrison for boys.

Ragwort · 02/06/2014 07:46

Agree with Sutton - they are all lovely name, traditional without being old fashioned, names that aren't 'trendy' or dated - a good choice Smile.

Montsti · 02/06/2014 08:52

Alexandra and Frederick or Alexander. Not keen on the others.

CrackersNow · 02/06/2014 08:56

Frederi(c)K and Gemma

I just watched Kongelige affaere and the the little girl (johann and caroline's daughter) was called Louise.

CrackersNow · 02/06/2014 08:57

The Danes could not pronounce Harry!

DoItTooJulia · 02/06/2014 09:00

Angus (Gus) is lovely!

And I love Isla for a girl.

Off your lists I like Clara and Hamish.

Good luck!

My favourite would have to be Hamish and Megan. But all names are lovely choices, but Gemma sounds a bit 80s/90s to me.

oohdaddypig · 02/06/2014 12:36

Thanks everyone

I had no idea this thread could ascend into a rendition of Katie Morag's song :) It's really made me laugh.

Sutton your post also tickled me, mainly because Clarissa is the one I don't really like but DH does. You must be my baby-naming kindred spirit.

Looks like it's Hamish/Harris depending on how the wee splodge looks on the day. And I still love Megan/meg although a fair number have confirmed it's a boring choice which is food for thought.

Weegiemum I love Rowan but DH also said no...sigh.

Eve (short for Evelyn?) and Harris are my faves. I absolutely hate Sandy as a NN for Alexander (I know it's v popular in Scotland) but I would go for Alex or even Sasha as a NN over Sandy.

AWombWithoutARoof · 02/06/2014 12:40

Nell and Hamish are really fab.

Helena is a little bit boring, and I had to be shaken awake to type this after reading the rest of your list. Grin

oohdaddypig · 02/06/2014 12:41

Thanks river. I dislike Evelyn only as I had a weird Aunt Evelyn! It's still an old lady's name to me. Must be due a revival, but not started by me. :)

why don't you like Sandy? (it's already a family name so I rather like it).

MummyBeerest · 02/06/2014 12:54

I really like Harris for a boy, and it's my favourite from your list.

Alexandra from your girls list.

I lie Evelyn solely because of Evelyn in The Mummy!

Sandy - I find it a bit - wet? And middle-aged. Sorry!
