Girls names ending in "a" or neutral sound - help please

Hello

Our surname ends in "ley".

I am struggling to find any girls names I like. Would like something quite "strong" sounding.

So far I like:

Sylvia - great aunt who was a badasss in her times. But is it a bit grannyish?
Julia - all the ones I know are cool plus love the John Lennon song (although it is about his dead mum )
Sanchia- one of the reporters on the today programme, but is it too odd? And we are not Spanish. At all.

I really don't like cutesy names. Would like something not too popular.

Name needs to not sound too horrific in broad Geordie or Scouse accent.

So - if anyone has any suggestions fire away! Feel free to mock my suggestions.

With 'ley' I think 'a' or a consonant ending is best, so what about:

I have a Sylvia and I'm so glad I went with it. I call her Sylvia sometimes and I imagine her being a feisty 'vee' as a teenager. It's a strong feminine name.

I also liked Olivia, but very popular here. Dozens of Sophias and Eva/Avas too. If you like Julia, how about Juliet?

Sylvia is elegant and not grannyish at all. Has really rather modern eco-meaning: lady of the forests.

Julia is elegant and classical.

Both names are, to my mind, pretty timeless.

TheWoollybacksWife · 27/05/2014 18:19

Both of those names are beautiful.

I came on to suggest Joanna but I have scouse relatives who seem to put a "W" in there. Before anyone protests at the implied scouse bashing I am from Liverpool. Grin
