My girls longlist and a request for more names

Hello,

Found out today I might be having a girl. Felt I was having a very 'boy' pregnancy which is obviously nonsense but as a result haven't narrowed down my girl names list yet.

Here's what I've got on the 'quite like' bench. Feel free to rip into and add more. Surname is one syllable, begins with an F. My DS is a Nathan.

Ideally I don't want a top 20 name.

Anna
Arietta
Calista/nn Callie
Camellia
Camille
Eloise
Etta
Jenna
Lorelei
Nola
Selena
Serena
Tamara
Tamsin
Tessa

Anna - lovely
Arietta - not sure, sounds a bit made up to me.
Calista/nn Callie - nice
Camellia - again not sure, I think of it as a flower not a name
Camille - only if you are French
Eloise - lovely
Etta - Like it. Not common but everyone will be able to spell/pronounce it.
Jenna - Quite like
Lorelei - Bit over the top for me
Nola - Not for me
Selena - like it, but I'd spell it Selina to make pronunciation more obvious
Serena - lovely
Tamara - ok, but a bit too assocated with It Girls for me
Tamsin - lovely (though dislike "Tammy")
Tessa - lovely

Other suggestions you might like:

Nina
Cara
Clara
Sylvie
Marianne
Madeleine
Beth/Bethany
Bryony
Maya (but v popular)

Anna - really like it.
Arietta - I teach a child with this as a surname. Is it a first name too?
Calista/nn Callie - like it.
Camellia - no, this doesn't sound like a name to me.
Camille - not keen
Eloise - quite like it
Etta - very sweet, I like it
Jenna - not keen. seems a bit 80s/90s to me
Lorelei - don't like it
Nola - not sure. It's ok. I've never heard it as a name
Selena - don't like it
Serena - it's ok
Tamara - it's ok
Tamsin - it's ok
Tessa - like it

I would go for Anna or Etta from your list.

Anna - love it
Arietta - it's ok
Calista/nn Callie - it's ok
Camellia - dislike, reminds me of camels
Camille - it's ok
Eloise - dislike, sounds wet and I don't like the 'wheeze' sound
Etta - nice, prefer it as a nickname though (for Henrietta or Arietta)
Jenna - nice, deserves a comeback
Lorelei - like it in theory but maybe not in real life
Nola - not bad
Selena - prefer Selina, which I do like
Serena - not a fan
Tamara - not a fan
Tamsin - like it, should be used more often
Tessa - not bad

I like Anna, Jenna, Selina and Tamsin the best.

HopefulHamster · 20/05/2014 16:32

Thanks for feedback so far - some interesting thoughts! I think I like Etta/Selena/Tamsin/Calista best so far but am prone to changing my mind.

Lorelei, if you're wondering, is because of the Gilmore Girls, which I adored, but I'm aware it's probably a bit redic for a little kid who will struggle to spell it out to everyone.

Suggestions are good too - going to go through them later properly :)

I like Jenna and Tamsin best, I also like the name Cara and Lara which think would suit your brief!

SqueezedMiddle · 20/05/2014 16:50

I love Etta. Simple, strong, pretty, kind of quirky but not weird.

I also like Anna and Camille.

Love Calista though, gorgeous name.

Whilst I like most of manicinsominac's list, please for the love of God do not call your daughter Candida - it's a fungus infection! I know it's a name too, but still...

HopefulHamster · 20/05/2014 21:59

Admittedly Candida has not made the shortlist...

Is it? Wow, I had no idea. She was a character in a book I read once. Good thing it isn't really my style or I might have used it!

Anna and Serena are great.

I think Etta is a really lovely name - plus I've never met one in 'real' life!

HopefulHamster · 21/05/2014 11:25

I've added Cara, Aurora, Hera. Problem is I've got a longer list than when I've started, but that's fine, I've got time for whittling :)

DH has not helped by saying he really likes Lorelei after all. So do I, but it's a mouthful, right?

The three above are nice too though. ACK ACK ACK! Maybe I should call her Ack-Ack.

TryDrawing · 21/05/2014 11:36

Could always shorten Lorelei to Rory Wink

TheWave · 21/05/2014 11:43

Nathan and Anna are quite hard to say together.

I like Nathan and Tessa

and Nathan and Serena

How about Jasmine or Yasmin?

AMI88 · 21/05/2014 12:35

Anna- love, also like Annie
Arietta- pretty
Calista/nn Callie- not a fan, calista is too American for my taste, and when I see callie I always catch myself saying Collie (dog)
Camellia- love
Camille- love
Eloise- dislike
Etta- love
Jenna- dislike
Lorelei- love, even though a mouthful, it's really pretty
Nola - love, is that the lioness from Lion King?
Selena- dislike
Serena- dislike
Tamara- dislike
Tamsin- dislike
Tessa- ok

I like Amelie, Betsy, hettie, holly, Mary, maggie, Florence, Matilda, iris, pearl, Marie, hazel, Rose, Bethan , Freya

CrispyFern · 21/05/2014 12:37

I like Nola best.

PolyesterBride · 21/05/2014 12:49

I like Anna and Tessa best from your list. Not keen in lorelei (maybe because I have no clue how to pronounce it)

HopefulHamster · 21/05/2014 12:54

I think it's Lor-uh-lie. Er maybe. That's what Gilmore Girls has taught me!

I like Cara Lorelei at the moment. Madness or nice? So Lorelei as a middle name, not a double-name.

Still like Etta but it's quite hard, need to find the right middle name if that's used.

Also seeing how much I've flip-flopped in one day since finding out potential gender (which might not even be right), maybe I should forget about it for a day or two :D

Nyree

Mutteroo · 26/05/2014 12:09

Etta is my fav from your short listed short list. I don't honk my taste in name matches yours so I'll leave it at that & hope you find a name that you adore.

EvilHerbivore · 26/05/2014 12:18

I really like Lorelei OP, think its got good nn potential and I think marylin monroe played a character called that in one of her films

Guin1 · 26/05/2014 15:29

I like Etta, Serena and Hera. I also like Tessa as a nn for Teresa. My niece is called Tamsyn, which I think is lovely, her nn is Tassy.

HopefulHamster · 26/05/2014 16:42

How do people decide anything! It's so hard. Husband currently really likes Cara, I just need to decide if it's definitely the one for me. It sometimes feels like such a big decision - the poor kid will need to carry it around for life! (changing name by deed poll excluded)

I still like Selina/Serena as well, and Calista (I know it doesn't have many fans on here).

I've gone off Etta for some reason.
