My girls longlist and a request for more names

Hello,

Found out today I might be having a girl. Felt I was having a very 'boy' pregnancy which is obviously nonsense but as a result haven't narrowed down my girl names list yet.

Here's what I've got on the 'quite like' bench. Feel free to rip into and add more. Surname is one syllable, begins with an F. My DS is a Nathan.

Ideally I don't want a top 20 name.

Anna
Arietta
Calista/nn Callie
Camellia
Camille
Eloise
Etta
Jenna
Lorelei
Nola
Selena
Serena
Tamara
Tamsin
Tessa

I have a cousin called Loreley spelg slightly different but I love it , its different and weve never had a problem saying it

HopefulHamster · 14/07/2014 16:16

Still here and debating names. Thinking of switching out Cara for one of the other names I like.

Question though - is it okay to have a long first AND middle name?

Eg if we used Serena Lorelai?

My thinking is that apart from announcing the birth and weddings, it doesn't matter what your middle name is, so I'd rather it was one I really like than one that 'fits', but is it too longwinded...

So indecisive and husband is no help.

EvilH Marilyn Monroe did indeed play a character called Lorelei Lee in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. The character was morally ambiguous but Monroe made her witty and charming. The film was based on the once-famous best-selling book of the same title by Anita Loos: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentlemen_Prefer_Blondes_%28novel%29

Probably most people have forgotten the book by now, but - as you have shown - Monroe's film is still remembered. If anyone is thinking of calling a child Lorelei it might be wise to see the film/read the book first.

Lorelei is a pretty name with a long history (she was a beautiful water-spirit who lived in the River Rhine and lured sailors to their deaths). The Lorelei Rock is still a tourist attraction.

Of OPs other names, I prefer Serena and Selina.

florascotia · 14/07/2014 17:50

Sorry - posted to soon. OP, I meant to say that I think Serena and Selina are both very pretty.

HopefulHamster · 14/07/2014 18:07

Thanks flora - 'my' Lorelai (I've changed spelling preference since last posts!) is Gilmore Girls related, not tooooo worried about other versions. I think :). It would only get as far as middle name for us, as I think it would be a pain to spell out all the time.

I was in love with Selina until I mentioned it to someone and got put off.

And in fact I was put off Serena because of a character in Gossip Girl (I watch too much girl-related TV, clearly), but now I've thought screw that, it's still an ace name.

It would help if I wasn't terribly indecisive at the best of times.

I've got a Tamsin so I am biased :) Nobody ever calls her Tammy though, the instinctive shortening seems to be Tams.

crazylady321 · 14/07/2014 22:14

Love Eloise off your original list :)

HopefulHamster · 14/07/2014 22:58

I thiiiiink my friend who is due four weeks before me might be going for Eloise. It's very nice, but my cousin has an Ellie so not sure I'd want to do it anyway.

OP posts:
Squtternutbaush · 14/07/2014 23:14

Eloise is nice but I'm not keen on any of the others.

I have a Cara, she's one of 3 that I've met in my life so not overly popular.

How about Francesca, Chiara, Erin, Erica, Cassandra (nn Cassie), Darcey, Greta, Louisa,

weatherall · 14/07/2014 23:22

Anna very popular, a bit plain, very inoffensive
Arietta I prefer aria and arian(n)a
Calista/nn Callie too ally mcbeal
Camellia too Charles wife
Camille pronounciation difficulties
Eloise nice but there are loads of e names atm
Etta sounds like a nn
Jenna I like it but does make me think of Jameson (porn)
Lorelei lovely
Nola good
Selena good
Serena good
Tamara I love this
Tamsin ok
Tessa too religious for me

weatherall · 14/07/2014 23:26

Now I've seen your other post Aurora is the best name.

Also I'd pronounce lorelei with a lee sound at the end not lie.

HopefulHamster · 28/09/2014 12:50

Grrr, I have just seen there is a Bradley Cooper/JLaw film coming out this month called Serena. Serena (JLaw), married to Cooper, is infertile and starts taking it out on Cooper's illegitimate son. She's got a touch of the tragic Lady MacBeth about her apparently. Happy days.

From the sounds of it, the film is pretty shit or it would have come out two years ago. But still, it's out in the same month as my baby! With the same name, for a horrible character!

It will be forgotten quickly, right?

Would it make you want to change name? Baby is being evicted in three or four days...

Tunna · 28/09/2014 21:49

What about Nyla instead of Nola? It would go lovely with Nathan x

CarriMarie · 28/09/2014 23:55

What about Carys or Sienna ?

HopefulHamster · 29/09/2014 00:10

Current name list, unlikely to add any more contenders unless I find something really special:

Serena (this was the choice until my post a couple of posts up, if anyone could comment on that, it would be great and really helpful).
Selina - my second choice.
Lorelai - our middle name I think, too hard to say/spell for a first
Calista/nn Callie - I still like this but DH doesn't 'love'
Cara - this was first choice for a while and I just went off it
Hazel - I like it but not particularly exciting

I wanted something 1) Not in top 100 2) Easy to say/spell 3) Sounds like a real name 4) Not pretentious

Going to make another thread for film advice so you might see my posts twice, sorry.

I really love Callie but find Calista a little hard sounding. Have you considered Calyssa which I think is softer sounding and you can still have Callie. It is just a thought.

I have two other suggestions and they are:

Eulalia/Eulalie

Vienna

Eulalia or Eulalie means "well spoken" and from what I have heard is a very old name.
