Can I have just Liv? DD is just Meg, so im not averse to having a shorter name on the BC but I love Olive and DH loves Liv.

What's the issues with people assuming a name is short for another name? If it isn't

I wouldn't meet a meg and say your name short for Megan? If they have introduced themselves as meg I could maybe assume it but why would you ask

Foodylicious · 04/05/2014 17:45

how does he feel about Olivia? quite different to Olive I think...

Quite like Liv Marie

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/05/2014 17:46

I dont like Olivia Grin

Liv is just fine.

If your going to call her Liv, then I don't think you need any longer name on the bc. Liv is nice, call her just Liv.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/05/2014 17:54

I would assume Meg was short for Megan (I live in Wales) unless the person was Greek.

But if the person in question went by Meg there would be no reason for me to ever use the "long form" and I'm sure I'd realise quite quickly.

As it goes I prefer standalone Meg to Megan and infinitely more than Margaret.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/05/2014 17:58

me too Ali Grin

I knew a Liv growing up, was pronounced "Leev".

Liv Alice ( or even Alys)?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/05/2014 18:02

DDs mn is Alice.

Liv Juliet?

Do it.
Its lovely.
I hate the idea you need to have a longer name you dont like as much just to be able to shorten to one you do.
When trying to pick girls names I liked Izzy but not Isabel, Lottie but not Charlotte....

florascotia · 04/05/2014 18:45

As Alis says, Liv is a name in it its own right.
Nothing whatsoever to do with Olive or Olivia.
It comes from Old Norse and means 'protection' or 'life'.

Older/filmbuff Mumsnetters may remember wonderful Norwegian actress, Liv Ullmann, Bergmann's muse.

squoosh · 04/05/2014 19:08

And there's the beautiful Liv Tyler.

ilovesprouts · 04/05/2014 19:11

my granddaughters called Olivia its not boring ;)

Mrsindecision · 04/05/2014 19:24

Yes, I suggested Liv Juliet upthread - lovely choice!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/05/2014 19:25

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/05/2014 19:29

Oh not til October but I know DH needs time to get into the name game Grin

No idea what we will call a boy.

OP posts:
Mrsindecision · 04/05/2014 19:33

Ok, give us an idea of your tastes for boys and let's see if we can give you some ideas....!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/05/2014 19:36

Names we like but cant use

Rex

Travis

My favourite is Lawrence but DH is not a fan. He says its too far away to discuss names but is happy to say No to something he isnt sure of.
