Name to fall in love with for DS

Im 24 weeks and trying to find a name to fall in love with for DS. We are both British but DP's surname is Spanishy sounding starts with S and three syllables ending in on. So want something that sounds good with that, and is also a strong English name, but not too popular. I got tired of being one of three in my class at school!

Current shortlist is

Oscar (like the sound and sounds good with surname but don't want anything too trendy. how many Oscars do you know?)

Isaac

Joseph (love the sound but don't really like nn Joe)

Saul (can't decide if this sounds good or bad with surname)

Have also considered Felix, Gabriel, Jasper.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Arnold and Augustus are family names on DP's side but don't really like Arnie or Gus as likely nns! Michael is another family name and possible middle name.

Out of your names, I like Isaac and Joseph. Not so much Saul (but he was not a nice King!).

Oscar is a bit trendy, but I only know one and he's 9.

Isaac is nice as is the suggestion of Matthias. We have a Quentin which isn't too trendy or how about Reuben or Dominic?

Don't like Saul but the rest are all very nice. I would use Joseph as the middle name if you're not keen on Joe. Oscar Joseph or Isaac Joseph are lovely.

I love Joseph and Jasper. You can just call him Joseph. My son's name has a NN that I don't like as well. I just call him by his full name and others can do as they please.

Quite likely to be more than one Joseph in class. How about Conrad?

Oscar - like it, but it's incredibly trendy - lots of Oscars beginning to come through the schools I teach in. In the top 20 at the moment I think (?) but suspect it will become dated fairly quickly.

Isaac - also fairly common, but more classic than Oscar. Like the NN Ike.

Joseph - again, very popular (personally I know three under three, and have taught LOADS) and all the ones I know seem to end up being called Jo-Jo, which I'm not a huge fan of! Nice, solid name though - possibly good as a MN?

Saul - dislike this; it sounds 'hard' and soap opera-ry to me

Felix is OK, but I love both Jasper and Gabriel, both of which are familiar but not excessively common.

Any thoughts op??

Thank you everyone… this has really given us food for thought… just been reading your comments to DP! We are veering off Oscar I think. Funnily enough I really liked Noah when we were expecting DD but have since gone off it!

Still keen on Isaac, Joseph and Gabriel is back up there (thank you Diamonds). I also like Jasper but it makes me think of Jasper Conran so not yet sure…

We both love the name Reuben but it doesn't go with our surname as that ends in -on too. Similar for Quentin.. Elliott is lovely but DS will have a five year old cousin who is Elliott so that is out.

Would love any more thoughts or suggestions. If you have a longish surname (3 syllables) does it sound better to have a shorter first name i.e. 2 rather than 3 syllables?

What do you think of Elijah and Jacob…? two others on our long list...

Are you deliberately looking at Hebrew/Jewish/biblical names? I like them all and they all seem of the same type. Not Quentin obviously.

I have a long 3 syllable surname starting with s and ending in on and we have a Jacob. I think it goes really well together.

I like Isaac and Joseph from your lisy and also Jonah.

Don't have a Joseph if you don't like Joe. Best friend has a DS Joseph and has not been able to control stopping Joe. She hates it, and seethes on a daily basis.

Not keen on jasper.

I love your list! Particularly like Jacob, Elliot, Elijah and Isaac. I don't like Jake though, which puts me off Jacob personally. All the names on your list are popularish, except Gabriel and Elijah, but it shouldn't put you off. The distribution is very broad - so even the number 1 name only equates to like 1% of boys that year or something (I'm sure a name geek will come and correct that stat!).

No, not deliberately, those just seem to be names we like as well as some different ones e.g. Quentin, Jasper. Less keen on the more traditional classic names e.g. John, Edward, David.

I have a new baby relation named Zeke who is adorable :)

Just realised he is not so new he is 14 months old! He was 8 weeks early and last weekend toddled most of a mile on a sponsored walk for cystic fibrosis ( he doesn't have it but his little friend does).

I really like Elliot and Isaac.

We have a Quentin so love that too.

How about Louis - does that flow nicely with your surname at all?

We have a 3 syllable surname. We have an Oliver and a Jude. I think they both work well. The 1 syllable does tend to get increased to 2. All my kids seem to have 2 syllable nicknames!

I did like Gabriel, but it sounded bad with or surname. Gabe is a cool nn. How about Joel? I love that too.
