How many Primroses do you know?

I love the name Primrose, and all the diminutives, (Prim, Primmy, Posy, Rosie)
but for some reason I'm nervous about it!
Is it really rare where you are? Would you bat an eyelid at a Primrose?
It's my first child so I'm not around children at all.
Middle name would be Mary and surname one syllable beginning with F (car manufacturer)

I like Rose on it's own but then she would have a one syllable first and surname which I'm not keen on. Other names I like are Alexandra and Daisy but not as much as Primrose!

Thanks!

One, lovely name and adore Posy as nn

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 30/03/2014 18:38

There's a prim in the hunger games books. Catkiss' s sister.

I don't know of any primroses but I do know of 3 rose's who are lovely roise however tend not to be so nice in my meetings of them

nooka · 30/03/2014 18:50

Totally not my taste, and Prim/Primmy are really quite awful (I just can't imagine choosing to be called Primmy!). Primrose Everdeen is a great character though, and I like Posy as a nn, although if I met a Posy I'd assume that she was Josephine (which I love).

Loving all the positive comments, thanks mumsnetters Smile think you've all dispelled my doubts.

Is the name of the younger sister in The Hunger Games? I like it sort of.

Sharaluck · 30/03/2014 21:38

None. I can't imagine calling anyone primrose to be honest, it doesn't sound like a name.

DaftMaul · 30/03/2014 21:53

I know a couple of Primroses. I know quite a few Daisy and Alexandras though.

Beetsarebisgusting · 31/03/2014 01:09

Nooooo, I have recently been trying to persuade dh to agree to Primrose for our baby. I thought it was a really cool 1920s name that nobody else would use. Goddammit.

I love the name Grin

Onesleeptillwembley · 31/03/2014 01:20

I don't know any. I think there may be a reason for that, it sounds 'prissy'. Also sounds like a cows name, like clarabelle. Sorry.

CreepyLittleBat · 31/03/2014 01:21

Primmy? Seriously? Can you imagine shouting it down the street? Might be ok if you live somewhere really posh I suppose. .....

Hmm I probably wouldn't use Primmy day to day, just affectionately when she's a baby. I would call her prim or Rosie/posy if I was doing any shouting down the street. Grin I don't live somewhere posh but do live somewhere multicultural where names are very mixed.
I know it's unusual and not to everyone's taste but I'm glad the majority like it or at least find it acceptable.

I like it, and nn Posy is lovely.

Emubaby · 31/03/2014 11:14

Love love love love! Its such a beautiful name!

Emma028 · 31/03/2014 15:34

Beautiful! I know a Posy for short!

squoosh · 31/03/2014 15:37

Tooth rottingly twee.

Poor Primrose.

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2014 15:39

It's not to my taste.

I really don't like the "Prim" bit of the name.

justhayley · 31/03/2014 15:40

I don't know any and have a 2 year old so am around children a lot. I think it's really pretty and am considering it as a middle name for DD due July Grin

bouncingbelle · 31/03/2014 17:13

IMO it's awful - I would hate to be called primrose and I think any child called primrose would have a hard time at school unless they lived in a vair posh area! Also agree with the poster who thinks it sounds a bit like a cows name.

On the other hand, posy and rose are gorgeous!

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 31/03/2014 17:37

It's a flower name. I think it's very like Lily or Rose or Jasmine or Violet. I don't think it's twee at all.

Benchmark · 31/03/2014 18:26

Really? A hard time at school? That interests me because it's the last thing I'd want. I figured with all the flower names and girly names it would mix well with they generation.

I really like it. Love Posy or Rosie nickname too.

cupofteaplease · 31/03/2014 21:15

Primrose was my dd3's middle name. I would have used it for her first name but dh had his heart set on something else.
I love it. I'm a teacher in an infant school and have never met another.

Viviennemary · 31/03/2014 21:17

I don't know any. And the only one I've heard of in real life is Harold Shipman's wife. It's quite a nice name if you can get away from that fact.
