How many Primroses do you know?

I love the name Primrose, and all the diminutives, (Prim, Primmy, Posy, Rosie)
but for some reason I'm nervous about it!
Is it really rare where you are? Would you bat an eyelid at a Primrose?
It's my first child so I'm not around children at all.
Middle name would be Mary and surname one syllable beginning with F (car manufacturer)

I like Rose on it's own but then she would have a one syllable first and surname which I'm not keen on. Other names I like are Alexandra and Daisy but not as much as Primrose!

Thanks!

One, she's about 10 months old.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 31/03/2014 21:25

I don't know any at all, but would definitely use it as a MN. I love flower names, but would probably not be brave enough to use Primrose as a first name if I'm being honest.

MyLeftElbow · 31/03/2014 21:31

I have a Primrose Smile she's Primrose Fae.

We had a huge list of names and really struggled to narrow it down. Then, very sadly and suddenly DP's nanna died. We were writing her obituary and her middle name had been Primrose and I fell in love with it.

Nickname-wise she mostly gets Primrose in full. She sometimes gets called "p" or pimms, or I sometimes call her primpleton when I'm tickling her! Blush

We are Geordies, not posh in the slightest!

myleftelbow lovely to hear of someone who's used it as a first name Smile Primrose Fae is a lovely combo. what sort of reactions do you get? And does she like her name?

Ignore the random 'I' at the end!

She's a happy little soul, refers to herself as "Pimrose" because she can't quite say it yet. Smile

We have a big pot of Primroses growing by the front door and she calls them her flowers. (She was asking about "Luke flowers" and "Joey flowers" the other day - those are her brothers!)

We've only had positive reactions, little old ladies especially love the name!

Kaekae · 01/04/2014 15:44

I don't know any, but the more I say it the more I like it!

RabbitPies · 01/04/2014 16:54

None, and I suspect there's a reason for that. It's awful. So twee that it's ugly.

It's just about ok as a middle name, but definitely not as a first.

LadyPenelopeCreightonWard · 01/04/2014 16:59

I like it, and there's plenty of shortened forms too if she doesn't want to use the whole name.

I don't think of The Hunger Games, I think of the little mouse in Brambly Hedge.

MamaPingu · 01/04/2014 17:00

I know 0!
The name is quite nice, it's a little fussy for me but if that's to your taste then go with it Smile
It's unusual but doesn't make you cringe haha. It's pretty!

I'm a fan of Rose/Rosie so anything of that sort is a winner in my book!

DiamondsAndRust · 01/04/2014 17:05

Harold Shipman's wife aside, I don't know any - I think I only remember that because during all the news coverage of the case it struck me as being a very unusual name.

Other than that, I think of Katniss' little sister in The Hunger Games and a character in the Chalet School books, which I was obsessed with as a child! It's not my style - I find it a bit girly and twee - but I don't think it's terrible.

Benchmark · 01/04/2014 19:42

Thanks for all your comments everyone, even the bad ones. Seems like it's definitely rising in popularity if this many people like it and that's a good thing to me.
Myleftelbow - your Primrose sounds lovely Smile I would love to have had a flower name growing up, I guess that's why I'm so drawn to them now.

I love when a comment on a baby name thread starts with 'Harold Shipman's wife aside.................' Grin

YouGrateMyCheese · 02/04/2014 00:39

Have you considered Prima? Maybe a bit more user friendly than Primrose while still retaining the Prim/Primmy nickname. It's meaning in Italian would be especially apt since she'll be your first born. Smile

nooka · 02/04/2014 02:06

Isn't Prima a sort of margarine? Oh no it's a knitting magazine. I knew it was familiar from somewhere!

It's one of my daughters middle names, I don't like the NN Rose though so that's why we couldn't use it as a first name. I love the full name.

YouGrateMyCheese · 02/04/2014 13:40

nooka You're probably thinking of Primula cheese spread. And you're right, it wouldn't be the best connection! Hmm

Marcipex · 02/04/2014 18:22

It was Primula Mary at the Chalet School! She was usually referred to by both names.

I love Primrose (Brambly Hedge) and nn Posy (Ballet Shoes).

PiratePanda · 02/04/2014 18:27

I love it. Don't know any personally.

honeybeeridiculous · 02/04/2014 18:49

I don't know any but I love it! I imagine a little curly haired blonde girl Grin
I know of a posy-blossom tho, not so keen on that one!

Miren · 02/04/2014 19:15

My second midwife was a Primrose - only one I've ever met and she was lovely. My DH bought me a huge bunch of flowers and I told him to give them to her - will never forget her.

It's really a lovely lovely name
