I'm really starting to warm to the name Olive, I think it has a fresh quirky feel to it, with a vintage edge at the same time iykwim Grin

I think it may be a marmite name....which is fine as I want something unusual!

I'm not keen on Olivia as it is overdone IMO.

So what do you think? Do you know any? Is it getting popular? What kind of vibe do you think it has?

Thanks in advance Smile

Olivia is lovely. Olive ..... isn't. It's quirky but not in a good way, and doesn't have attractive associations. (Pickle in jar, oil, Popeye's girlfriend, etc.)

Yes it does seem to be getting popular (at least on Mumsnet) but I really can't see why.

I like it much better than Olivia. I think its lovely.

Chottie · 13/03/2014 05:18

Sorry no. It is such a harsh sounding name. Goes with Ena, Edna, Maud, Enid and Una.

thegreatgatsby101 · 13/03/2014 05:36

I likel both Olivia and Olive. I don't think either are that popular or unusual around here, although I know that Olivia is nationally.

puthyjip43 · 13/03/2014 05:40

Love it!

pinkpeoniesplease · 13/03/2014 07:46

I ADORE this name OP, I am campaigning for DH to let me use this for this DC if it's a girl. I am not old enough to know the associations above, I think it's lovely! I like the nn Liv/Livvy.

IPokedABadgerWithASpoon · 13/03/2014 08:06

Love it! Also love that its an anagram of "I Love" Sadly it won't work with surname unless I would want any future dd to sound like she was named from a dulex paint chart!

noodlebum · 13/03/2014 09:39

I like it, reminds me of the girl from Little Miss Sunshine.

Emubaby · 13/03/2014 10:42

Love it! Very cool name.

minipie · 13/03/2014 14:46

It is a marmite name! I really dislike it sorry, but know plenty who love it (I know of 2 little Olives, so it may be getting quite popular in certain areas...)

PreciousPeach · 13/03/2014 14:52

Yep as I thought pretty marmite....but I m ok with that. None of the associations bother me tbh, as I think people would soon start to associate it with the person called it.

Those who say it pounds harsh I actually don't get that at all I think it has a soft sweet sound to it.....but I suppose that is the thing with names not everyone will perceive them in the same way Smile

I think Olive Xanthe would be pretty great.....(I love playing with name combinations) Blush

We clearly have the same taste. Olive and Xanthe were two names on our short list we didn't choose for DD as she didn't look like either! Love them both :)

PreciousPeach · 13/03/2014 15:29

evertonmint great minds think alike and all that....preens at the thought of my fabulous taste Wink Grin

I'm still ttc but I'm slightly obsessed with it all so I'm lurking everywhere! I'm very close to my grandad and his mum was Olive. I've always thought I'd love to use the name if I ever had a girl, can't see me using it as a first name though. I do see it as being a little too dated, but I'd rule out Olivia because it is very common.
Would just need a first name to go with!

CruCru · 13/03/2014 18:07

I love Olive BUT Olivia is so popular that I can imagine people mishearing and assuming that her name is Olivia.

Gugglebum · 13/03/2014 18:31

I'm another who doesn't get this name. I know one, age 4, and I still think of the food every time I hear her name. Could be because my DH is obsessed with olives of all varieties. I'd be looking for siblings Caper, Pickle, and Tapenade.

Love Olive! It's our cat's name and she is ace!

JessicaD21 · 13/03/2014 19:15

I love it! I get the vintage vibe from it too i actually think its really girly and pretty! :)

selsigfach · 13/03/2014 19:18

I love it! Suggested it to my husband, he just said "I don't like olives." Argghhhh.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 13/03/2014 19:22

I really don't like it.

There are several under 5's called Olive here.

Yet another one was announced at toddler group the other day - it is a green, greasy, shiny kind of name.

And I'm old enough to remember On The Buses as well

EugenesAxe · 13/03/2014 19:24

Personally, I love it. It's a very versatile oil and 'You're Not Alone' is a top tune.

EugenesAxe · 13/03/2014 19:24

Caveat - it may not actually have been called that.
