I know a 6 yr old Valentine (Valentin) but he is Russian.

I like Terence/Terry! Although I know it's very 70s throwback.

oldbutnotpastit · 21/01/2014 15:51

should have included piers and pierce

Hey you missed Cosmo off the list! Think no 1123 or something like that last year. From your list I like Cassian and Caspian.

talulahbelle · 21/01/2014 18:24

I love Rhodri, but neither me nor DH are Welsh so I don't think we'd get away with it.

MsJJones · 21/01/2014 19:00

Lawrence/Lawrence are both around 400+

Theonlyoneiknow · 21/01/2014 20:22

I think Murray might be in the top 100 in Scotland

I love Cassian and Finnian

Lottiedoubtie · 21/01/2014 20:25

Dara
Eoghan
Duncan

Are the only three I'd consider from your list.

Mintyy · 21/01/2014 20:25

I like Sydney.

Theonlyoneiknow · 21/01/2014 21:21

Duncan is a great boys name. I know a few, they are all lovely men!

gruffalosfriend · 21/01/2014 22:20

Great list!

I love Aubrey, Clement, Finnian and Quentin (we have oneSmile)!

curlew · 21/01/2014 22:25

Please can the "I'm not sure I'd be brat enough to use it" contingent remember that there is very little braver involved in giving somebody a name. If there is bravery involved it is in bearing of the name for maybe 90 years.

curlew · 21/01/2014 22:26

Brave, not brat!

minipie · 21/01/2014 22:26

Griffin is awesome (maybe as a middle name though...)

BikeRunSki · 21/01/2014 22:31

Surprised Duncan is not higher.

Ambrose rocks - never done my brother any harm!

Jemimapuddlemuck · 21/01/2014 22:34

I know a little Trevor, I think it's quite nice :)

Juno77 · 21/01/2014 22:37

'Useable names'

I beg to differ.

BananaHammocks · 22/01/2014 05:50

Thanks for doing this, I did the girls one!

I like Floyd, Ivor, Lysander, Griffin, Caspian, probably wouldn't use any though!

Mrsindecision · 22/01/2014 06:42

Interesting list but apart from a few that shorten to fairly mainstream names (Zachaeus - Zach, Finnian - Finn, Edmond - Ed) I would consider most to be completely unusable and I know my ds (secondary school age) would be horrified at the prospect of being named most of the above. Don't forget you are giving someone a name they have to wear for the rest of their lives. Imo, many of these 'stand out' for all the wrong reasons, and would only be used for the sake of being different.

oldbutnotpastit · 22/01/2014 09:12

i did miss out Cosmo and Kurt for that matter . By the time i'd wades through the name list a few times i was beginning to go cross- eyed . i would agree that Murray is considerably more popular in Scotland

curlew when i used the phrase brave enough to use the name , i meant brave enough to inflict it on a child as i'm fully aware it is the child who will have to live with the name .

waded not wades

That's a great list!

My favourites are Julius, Sydney, Quentin and Finnian. I'm surprised they are not in top 1000.

cupcakeicing · 22/01/2014 11:03

I love the name Duncan. I'm always a little surprised though quite glad it hasn't become more popular in the resurgence of traditional names up here.
I also like Grant, Lucius and Eoghan (Eoin).

bassingtonffrench · 22/01/2014 11:15

The best is duncan by quite a mile. Def due a revival.

I think some of them are far less weird than many within the top 1000, or even 100!

I love names that are 'normal' but out of favour.

Those that stand out for me are..

terence - terry is great
emlyn
ivor
sydney - i presume sidney is higher
allan
malcolm - ulrika johnson has a son with this name?!
barnabas - amazed this is not higher. I know two barneys
clement - lovely as a middle name
clarence
duncan
maurice
roy
harold - so many harrys why not harolds?
graham
donald
geoffrey - geoff is a fab name
gerald - gerry is good
edmond - presume edmund is higher

the others are too way out for me

on the other hand, IMO the following names are unpopular for a reason and should not be revived..

barry
trevor
keith
derek

oldbutnotpastit · 22/01/2014 12:38

I know what you mean about Barry , Derek ,Keith and Trevor . They just seem to dated .
Yet Barry sounds so similar in style to the ubiquitous Harry while Derek is not that far from Eric which appears to be growing in popularity .
I wonder how long it will be for these names do feel useable again .

OP posts:
Juno77 · 22/01/2014 12:44

You think Barry, Trevor, Keith and Derek are dated, but ROY is okay? Baby Roy?!

Graham is dated
Terry is dated
Allan is dated
Gerry is dated
