I'm starting to suspect that half the families we know have already used this method to name their children.

We knew a good 15 to 20 from the girls' list. From above list, we know:

Augustine and Bertram brothers (incidentally, other sib is Ignatius where does that come in the list?]
Augustus [sib to three of the ‘under-1000’ names in the girls’ list!]
Murray
Aneurin
Eugene
Alan
Duncan
Maurice
Grant [brother of Scott and Ross, nice and phonetic]
Humphrey [sib to Octavia, also on the other list]
Edmund
Crispin

lancelottie Ignatius is at 3,987 with 4 babies born in 2012

I don't like any of those names. Finnish isn't too bad I suppose but the others are not my cup of tea.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 13:12

Finnish?! Really?

Someone from Finland
Completing something

Those are definitions of Finnish (obviously disregarding spelling)

Sometimes I think people look at a name written and don't think of the actual word.

'Hello, my name is Finnish'
'Pleased to meet you, my name is Start'

Idreamofsunshine · 22/01/2014 13:28

Haha no sorry Finnian stupid auto correct

bassingtonffrench · 22/01/2014 13:30

Juno I like dated names! I didn't say Barry, Trevor, Keith and Derek are dated, obviously they are, I said they weren't nice. I guess it is personal choice to an extent. I think they also have certain 'connotations' which aren't positive.

But Roy is a fab name! What's not to like? Ray is also great. Jerry McGuire anyone?!

Agree about Finnish. its just a word.

bassingtonffrench · 22/01/2014 13:31

Ok that explains it!

Finnian is OK. not my cup of tea. But I think I've already established Im Geoffrey kind of girl!

bassingtonffrench · 22/01/2014 13:33

lancelottie are you nigella lawson?

That's one hell of an unusual list of friends children!

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 22/01/2014 13:39

In RL I know one each of

Ivor
Luther
Valentin
Humphrey
Horatio

all aged 5 or under.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 13:48

I'd be concerned Finnian would be accidentally pronounced Fenian WinkShock

Roy. I can't believe you'd think about calling a baby Roy. Imagine a wee 3 or 4 or even 10 year old Roy.

Horatio, Ivor, Humphrey, Luther... so pretentious!

Timetoask · 22/01/2014 13:52

I really like Quentin.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 22/01/2014 13:52

Yes, that's right. All my friends are pretentious. You rumbled me. It couldn't be that they just have different tastes from you (I suspect Ivor may well have been named after the engine, as it happens).

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 13:55

Sorry adventure - I am just imagining little Humphrey with his sister Octavia in Waitrose.. it's just so faux posh.

Or maybe just posh.

Grin
Jemimapuddlemuck · 22/01/2014 13:57

Luther is kind of cool.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 14:13

For 2 reasons I don't like Luther:

All I can think of is Idris Elba and murders
Northerners say it like Loofah

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 22/01/2014 14:15

"All I can think of is Idris Elba"

Yes, many MNers seem to have that problem...

Lancelottie · 22/01/2014 14:15

Yep, I'm definitely Nigella. Without the cooking skills or bust.

We just know a lot of children, I suspect! The offspring have been in three different, large, comprehensive schools. Their drama/music* clubs seem to be particularly rife in Persephones, Humphreys and children named after random geographical features (Tarn, Blakeney, Derwent, Isis...).

*Except for the local youth brass band. The kids there are called things like Peter, Tom and Sarah.

ZenNudist · 22/01/2014 14:21

Thanks for doing this. After the girls thread I read the ONS long list but felt there was very little inspiring. Most just looked like badly spelt versions of names. One of my favourites was Jay-jay - wtf?!

Of this list Aubrey is cool but I can't see me using it. I know a baby Ambrose, how we laughed Wink. I like Clement but think its bit popish.

If anything reading the long list just makes me think there is less variety of good names for boys compared to girls.

poppydaisy · 22/01/2014 15:11

Great list, op, thanks!

Lots of these names may sound 'old fashioned' or 'upmarket' now but just like Hugo and Sebastian, for example, I expect many to rise up into the top 100 over the next years.

I like Linus, Aneurin, Quentin, Finnian and Clement in particular.

To the poster who that thought Finnish sounds like someone from Finnland, how do you feel about Finn, an actual person from Finland (and a part of a fish!)?

poppydaisy · 22/01/2014 15:19

Ivor and Sydney are lovely too!
