Amelia - how popular?

Tea1Sugar · 23/12/2013 17:29

How many do you know? We've chosen this for dd2, love it, then discovered it's ranked no1 in the baby names list! We know one, she's 11.

Dd1 (3yo) has no Amelias at her nursery, ballet, gymnastics etc. I'm a primary school teacher and there are a few Amelies but I've not taught an Amelia.

How many do you know? Is it really that popular that they'll be loads in her class?!

Mine is almost 5, only one in her year group.

I know about 3 aged 5 and under.

birdybear · 23/12/2013 22:38

I have one who is 6 , one other in her year group. Don't know any others.

BrianTheMole · 23/12/2013 22:41

3 under 5.

Volume121 · 23/12/2013 22:43

I know two - one is 31 and a friend from school, the other is 4

HandragsNGladbags · 23/12/2013 22:43

I have one who is 4, there is 1 other at ballet, 1 a couple of years younger at her old nursery and an Amelie in her class at school.

But we also liked Phoebe, Lucy and Abigail and I know at least one of each of those as well. I know more Isabelle's and Jessica's than I do Amelia's.

It's a beautiful name and it suits her.

HidingFromDD · 23/12/2013 22:45

Mine is 18! Never had another one in her year group but oddly had two in her riding lessons. Maybe Amelias just like expensive sports

CatsAreLikeChocolates · 24/12/2013 10:49

Put it this way, I know more Imogens, more Elizabeths, and more way more Florences than Amelias. I think it's a timeless classic and if you love it then you should use it. Much better than something "You-neek"!

HaroldTheGoat · 24/12/2013 18:19

It's popular for a reason, it's a lovely name.

enderwoman · 24/12/2013 18:32

Go for it.

I have a Jack (born 12 years ago when it was number one) and he has never been in the same class as another Jack.
His brother Harry (7 years old) has never been in the same class as another Harry.

Personally I think that there are local names that are popular. Harry is in a class of 30 (14 boys)which includes 3 Olivers while Jack has always had a couple of Ellie/Ella and Sophie in his class.

Imo if she isn't the only Amelia at school then so be it.

I was born in the 70s and always in a class with fellow Kate/Katie/Catherine/Kathryn etc and have never been inconvenienced by that.

Vpopular with variations on spelling -know loads under 3

FrumiousBandersnatch · 24/12/2013 19:56

You might find this interesting - British Baby Names does a revised top 100 grouped by spelling:

www.britishbabynames.com/blog/combined-spellings-2012-girls.html

In 2012 there were just over 7000 girls born and named Amelia, and approx 1000 named Emilia, in England and Wales.

cookielove · 24/12/2013 20:05

I love the name so so pretty. I know two 3 year olds and one 1 year old.

Privilegeismine · 24/12/2013 20:08

Lovely name, I know 8 who are under 10 though.

qumquat · 27/12/2013 20:29

I know lots but mainly older as I'm a secondary teacher. I think it's important to go with what you love and not let popularity or otherwise sway your decision.

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 27/12/2013 20:42

I have a dd at nursery, a ds at infant school and a dd at junior school and out of all of those children we know 1 Amelia, aged 7. We are in Surrey. Go for it, beautiful name. There are reasons why lovely names are popular Smile

RegularVoltaire · 27/12/2013 20:57

6 Amelias, 2 Amalias, 1 Emilia.

2 are babies.
1 is known as Millie

MoominMammasHandbag · 27/12/2013 21:01

Aargh, mine is 15. I thought it was unusual but classic. Really hate that it is now so popular.

toobreathless · 28/12/2013 00:10

1 Amelia
2 Emilias
1 Amelie

I know far more William's and Samuel's & Matilda's. doesn't seem that popular here.

prettyinpink90 · 28/12/2013 01:08

Amelia is our no1 choice for our little girl due in April too. I also really like Emilia but not sure if people would keep mistaking her for an Amelia. We don't know any Amelia's currently but do know its a very popular name so the chances of having others with the same name in her class will be high.

sleepingbeautiful · 28/12/2013 05:25

1 Amelia 18 months
2 Amelie 9 months and 7 months

SoWhatDoWeDoNow · 28/12/2013 05:29

Very.

Lebkuchenlover · 28/12/2013 07:46

Extremely popular!

BNmum · 28/12/2013 08:05

Very popular. I know one in he 30s and 6 under the age of 3. It's a nice name though so you should go of i if you like it. Is there a Website to show popularity based on regions? This might give you a better idea of its standing in your area.

randdom · 28/12/2013 10:21

I know 3 children 3 and under and one adult.

At the end of the day though what matters is you like it. You can never be sure if she is going to be in a class with other people with the same name just by how popular it is statistically. My name wasn't top 10 when I was born (around the 20s) and I have always been around lots of girls my age with the same name. Some things you just can't predict so go with what you heart is telling you :)

ThistletoeAndWine · 28/12/2013 10:23

I'm sure it's the top name of 2013 on bounty
