Amelia - how popular?

How many do you know? We've chosen this for dd2, love it, then discovered it's ranked no1 in the baby names list! We know one, she's 11.

Dd1 (3yo) has no Amelias at her nursery, ballet, gymnastics etc. I'm a primary school teacher and there are a few Amelies but I've not taught an Amelia.

How many do you know? Is it really that popular that they'll be loads in her class?!

Choose a name you love irrespective of it's popularity. In my dd's year there are very few girls with a top 20 name for their year of birth, but a number of duplicates of names which appear well outside the top 100. You really can't tell but you'll be fed up to choose a name you like less because it's less popular only to discover another at school anyway!

I agree that it's very pretty but seems to be the Chloe of yesterday. I know 2 Amelie's, 4 Amelia's and 2 Emilia's. If you like it though I wouldn't be put off with it being popular. I don't understand that notion - go for it.

Christmascandles · 28/12/2013 10:58

Go for it, it's lovely Smile
It was my DGM name and my dd1 chose it for her dd
We were surprised when we read yesterday that it was no1 as we don't know any others maybe I ought to get out moreBlush

I.dont.know or know of a single one, of any age Grin that is the thing with stats - they cover millions of babies born in one year across the whole country.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 28/12/2013 11:03

Maybe its a location thing...

North East - know 0.

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 29/12/2013 05:06

I'm in SW London and know lots of little Eves, Matildas and a couple of Darceys but not a single Amelia under 30.

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 29/12/2013 05:07

ps. It is lovely!

I have an 11 year old Amelia and she has been the only one in her nursery and primary school. Now she's at secondary, there's one other Amelia in her year. I think the name is more popular now, but I don't know any others.

Tea1Sugar · 29/12/2013 09:14

Thank you everyone. It does appear to vary in popularity across the country. As I said in my op, I only know one age 11 and I'm a primary school teacher, there aren't any Amelias at dd's nursery and we're in surrey. So we are settled. Our dd2 is 100% going to be Amelia, with either Kate or Claire as a middle name :-)

Good decision! Fwiw, I personally prefer Kate as the middle name but both go well. Xmas Smile

ProudPineapple · 29/12/2013 18:09

Oo yes, Kate over Claire (actually I think Kate Amelia is rather lovely too)!

TransatlanticCityGirl · 30/12/2013 04:40

My DD is an Amelia, I met one other at a playgroup, and my brother's girlfriend is an Amelie.

Insepid is obviously the wrong word to describe the name otherwise it wouldn't be so annoyingly popular.

HoneyandRum · 31/12/2013 14:46

I'm in Germany and Amalie, Mia, Maya are all huge over here too - names with those sounds are sweeping the western world (we lived in the USA and Amelia/Eva/Ava/Mia/Maya huge there too). The other name that we find everywhere we go in the under 10 set is Sophia/Sofia.

Kaekae · 01/01/2014 22:58

This was on our shortlist four years ago. But we decided against it because suddenly quite a few people we knew named their babies it. The name we went for is now just as popular. Popular names are so for a reason, it is a pretty classic name and I still really like it. I now only know of one Amelia she is 17 and goes by the name of Mia.

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2014 23:06

Massively

DD is 2, and is surrounded by Amelias everywhere she goes, aged 3-1ish.
DD's name coudl feasilbly be a nn for Amelia (it isn't) and there were so many Amelias at the baby group I went to with herthat she was known as "Just A**".

Within that age rangeish I also know an Emilia and an Amelie, actually 2 Amelies. Only 1 is French.

elishalesley · 06/01/2014 10:36

I know Amelia is a popular name but that's still what we're calling our daughter. She will be Amelia Leigh Rose!

Greentoothbrush · 07/01/2014 01:01

There's 4 in my sons class... Age 4-5 and I know of two babies too..
Nice though, but the fact it's so popular instantly turns me off.

SomethingOnce · 07/01/2014 09:33

I was put off the name when somebody told me it's also a medical condition.
