Wanted: second-hand name in good condition

I've looked around at all the new brand new shiny names out there, and dh and I just can decide on one. So we have decided to try and restore a name another MN poster doesn't want anymore. So if you have any names you've out-grown, are a little too old fashioned for you or simply not to your taste but you see how someone else might like them, feel free to donate them here...cannot offer any incentives other than the promise to give all offers due consideration Smile

Rebecca veto'd as an ex of DH's, but had I had a third DD...

Blottedcopybook · 26/10/2013 17:28

I loved Soames for a boy, but hubby point blank refused. Other boy names we didn't get to use include Noah, Alistair and my favourite Jonah. DC4 (DD2) would have been called Jonah if she had been a boy.

Girls names - Ds1 would have been called Caroline if he'd been a girl. I loved Ariadne and Cecily but those were overruled too.

MawMcGonaghoulie · 26/10/2013 17:49

If we'd had a squad of girls I would have liked
Anna
Elspeth
Esme
Marianne
Naomi
Roslind
Ruth
and possibly
Gabrielle
Marianne
Mariella
Tamsin
Xanthe

Another boy might have been one of these
Alistair
Corin
Ewan
Fergus
Guy
Leon
Lewis
Richard
Sebastian
Torrin

niffernaffer · 26/10/2013 18:26

Chlorinella · 26/10/2013 19:58

I can offer you Agnes - I loved the idea of having a cute little lamb - but was overruled because 'Aggie' was an ugly nick-name.

Also I knew an old lady who was called Elfrieda and was always known as by her family as Elf. Wouldn't that be sweet, to have a little Elf running around? Then she can use Frieda as her grown-up name for serious occasions.

CordeliaRose · 27/10/2013 16:03

I have a friend called Agnes whose nickname has always been Nancy.
It really suits her Smile

ThePonderer · 27/10/2013 22:26

Damn! You mean Aggie wasn't compulsory?

Give me that name back, I've changed my mind...

LauraChant · 28/10/2013 10:58

I have two boys - if i had a girl she would have been Rose or Annie Rose, so I will donate those to you, along with Linnet which I liked but DH didn't.

Boys names that I wasn't allowed include: Teddy (Edward); Sammy (Samuel); Sorensen and Sebastian. Please give them a good home.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 28/10/2013 11:08

Caitlin - had boys

Rory - I love it but can't pronounce it because I've got a bit of a lisp!

Molewoman · 29/10/2013 18:20

DD1 would have been Simon (nn Sam)
DS would have been Leonie
DC4 changed its mind part-way but would have been Claire or Ian; I wanted Matthew but DH thought it was 'too Jewish' Confused
You've had some interesting suggestions, OP. I hope your baby likes whatever you settle for (I've always disliked my own name and my sister positively hates hers).

Linguaphile · 31/10/2013 23:03

Claudia
Constance
Millicent
Rosemary
Primrose
Alexandria
Evangeline
Wilhelmina (nn Mina)

Britishseamonkey · 02/11/2013 09:20

Names I like that were a no go for hubby:

Sadie
Elsie
Anais
Bethan
Megan
Blanchette
Hannah
Rosa
Nellie

Robin
Walter
Daniel/Danny
Samuel/Sam

SanityClause · 02/11/2013 09:26

If DD1 had been a boy, she would have been Edward James. (DC3 is a boy, and has neither of these names.)

When we chose DD1's name, DH said we should call a second girl Tabitha Madison. (We have a second DD, and she is called something else entirely.)

I'm not sure if any of these are useful, but will say, I do love Sylvia, and sometimes wish I had called DD1 that.

WhiteHairReally · 26/11/2013 20:56

Dear Ichats,

I hope all is well and was wondering if you went for a 'pre-loved' name after all?

KristinaM · 14/01/2014 12:40

Bumping this as I'd like to know which name you chose

florascotia · 14/01/2014 13:21

Some old-fashioned names, or names much used now. I think some might be worth reviving; others, I'm not so keen:

Rosalind, Rosamund, Patience, Prudence, Richmal, Richenda, Phyllis, Beryl, Honoria, Priscilla, Magdalen, Shirley, Adelaide, Valerie/Valeria, Cicely, Julian/Gillian, Gertrude, Lucinda, Lucilla, Amabel, Joan, Henrietta, Marianne, Judith, Barbara, Cynthia, Veronica, Verena, Sibyl/Sibylla, Ruth, Wilhelmina, Augusta, Marilla, Marjorie, Meredith, Valentina, Vanessa, Thelma, Marcia, Bridget, Maureen, Philippa, Emmeline, Sylvia, Winifred, Susan, Mavis, Roberta, Ursula....

florascotia · 14/01/2014 13:22

Sorry for repeat names - others had same ideas while I was still typing.

MadameJosephine · 14/01/2014 21:49

Names vetoed by DP but loved by me include Constance and Emmeline for girls and Darwin and Edison for boys. We are definitely not having any more babies so can have them

Spaghettinetti · 15/01/2014 16:58
