Claudia.

Clara sounds like a russion shot putter. id put it in the same category as Gertrude.

SanityClause · 17/09/2013 21:13

Initial reaction was Claudia, but on reflection, I think I prefer Clara.

Karbea · 17/09/2013 21:15

I love both of these names, I wasn't aware of the meaning of claudio, so with that in mind I'd say Clara.

Frikadellen · 17/09/2013 22:55

I like both but prefer Claudia The meaning wouldntput me off

Me too ToffeeCaramel - also one of the first things I laid eyes on when casting about for a new MN name!

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/09/2013 22:01

Clara - if it's Klar-ah.
Claudia - if it's Klaw-dia.

If it's Claire-ah/Cloud-ia then I'd choose neither.

JumpingJackSprat · 20/09/2013 22:10

claudia.

clara sounds prissy to me - and claire isnt great. claudia is timeless, beautiful and elegant.

karamcleod · 20/09/2013 22:15

Clara!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 20/09/2013 22:28

Clara

barmybunting · 20/09/2013 23:19

Clara. This has been one of my favourite names for 20 odd years. It seems to be rising in popularity now, but not too much. Easily pronounced, classic and beautiful.

Claudia is pretty, but I am never sure whether to say Clowdia or Clawdia if that makes sense?

MairzyDoats · 20/09/2013 23:24

Claudia. Also love Claudie as a nn. Clara reminds me of the rich girl in a wheelchair in Heidi. Which isn't a bad thing, I rather liked her as a child, but Claudia is more elegant and stronger.

Sunnysummer · 21/09/2013 13:27

Claudia! It is strong but doesn't have a clear stereotype to me - Claudia could be outgoing, elegant, feisty, thoughtful, sporty, musical or studious, all sorts...

Clara, on the other hand, sounds like a bit of a goody two shoes.

PigStack · 21/09/2013 13:28

Clara

GwendolineMaryLacey · 21/09/2013 13:33

Claudia.

I always think people who let ancient meanings of names put them off a name they otherwise love are a bit daft. My name means princess but no bugger has ever treated me like one!

MrsHoratioNelson · 21/09/2013 13:41

Not Claudia Sad

I want it and I suddenly started seeing it on here in the last few weeks...

"I always think people who let ancient meanings of names put them off a name they otherwise love are a bit daft."

But in the case of Claudia it is not an ancient meaning. The Latin adjective claudus means disabled/lame.

Many names are not derived directly from another language, they're just made up (or people attach random meanings), in which case I would agree with you. But Claudia is, imo, different. As is Cecilia (meaning blind), of Felix (meaning happy in Latin).

Dylemma · 27/09/2013 21:33

Didn't the name Claudia predate the Emperor Claudius with the bad leg? Confused
