What do you think of Luther as a name? Lu or Louis for short? I love the meaning Solider of the people and its the only name that i haven't gone off after a few days. But i am still really unsure :S

I like it - I would assume that you were thinking of Martin Luther King (esp for a baby born this year) - so an excellent and inspiring name choice. I didn't know the meaning and like that also.

nilbyname · 11/08/2013 16:59

It's also a synonym for the devil, and for that reason I dislike it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2013 17:04

I'm not aware of links to the devil. My first thought was of Lutheranism, after Martin Luther (not King). It's quite a nice sound but it's a surname, which is why I'm not so taken by it personally.

benfoldsfive · 11/08/2013 17:12

Thats Lucifer for the devil isn't it?

Yep, Martin Luther King is the inspiration - as is the meaning. We both work with marginalized people, me on the front line and my DH in the courts. Equality, Justice and people are really important to us and we want the name to reflect these things. We also want it to be strong and something he can grow with. We like Louis for short.

Lenny

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 11/08/2013 19:09

I love it but when I suggested it in RL everyone hated it.

KateCroydon · 11/08/2013 19:41

Luther Blisset. Go for it.

LaRosaBella · 11/08/2013 19:48

I like it!

TotallyPaninied · 11/08/2013 20:06

Love it. It's special, noticeable and from an inspirational character.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 11/08/2013 20:15

Vandross

Layl77 · 11/08/2013 20:24

I like it!

KittenofDoom · 11/08/2013 21:00

It's a yes from me.

PeazlyPops · 11/08/2013 21:01

I'm not sure to be honest. It was on the short list for DS, but we thought it was too harsh, too stern.

PeazlyPops · 11/08/2013 21:02

Oh and it depends on where you live, as to how it would be pronounced.

Round here it would be Loofah!

PeriodMath · 11/08/2013 21:04

It's ridiculous.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 11/08/2013 22:07

If I heard the name I'd presume you were a staunch Protestant first or that you were a fan of the crime show! I'm not madly keen on it but don't think it's horrible and as it has special significance for you and your DH, use it if you love it. Good luck with the upcoming baby xxx

nilbyname · 12/08/2013 07:33

Luther a variant of LUcifer. But obviously not that well known.

Love the reasons for liking the name,
Then use it, its a bold choice.

mrsharrystyles · 12/08/2013 07:35

Sounds like you pinched it off the telly programme. Don't like it at all.

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 07:38

Sorry but I don't like it. Because of Martin Luther King, I'd assume you had the same ethnic origin. Fine if you do but not otherwise!

Toomuch2young · 12/08/2013 07:42

I instantly think of Lex Luther the baddie in Superman.
I think it sound harsh and surname like, though i do like your reasons for choosing it.

ShoeWhore · 12/08/2013 07:44

No - makes me think of the devil too.

TV show puts me off as well.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 12/08/2013 07:59
