What do you think of Luther as a name? Lu or Louis for short? I love the meaning Solider of the people and its the only name that i haven't gone off after a few days. But i am still really unsure :S

Why would you need to be of the same ethnic origin of someone to name your child in honour of them?!

Laquila · 12/08/2013 09:02

I can't find anything that backs up Luther being a variant of Lucifer. (Doesn't the latter comes from the Latin for light?)

I like it - I think it's strong and unusual enough to be interesting. I think you might get comments along the lines of, "Did you name him for MLK, Martin Luther, or the TV show?" but I'm sure you'd be ale to ignore.

I think the temptation to shorten it to Luth might be strong though.

Sparklysilversequins · 12/08/2013 09:18

When I was younger there seemed to be a lot of German Shepherd dogs around called Luther, so no way.

Dackyduddles · 12/08/2013 09:26

I like it.

I first thought of idris alba. Not a bad connection in my (swoon) eyes.

Dackyduddles · 12/08/2013 09:29

I can't admire MLK or use any of the three names because I'm white?!?

That has to be THE biggest crock of shit Ive ever heard on mn.

dyslexicdespot · 12/08/2013 09:32

I agree with Dackyduddles.

KittenofDoom · 12/08/2013 10:52

It's not exclusively a "black" name, my great-grandfather was called Luther and he was Welsh.

I thought of another Luther, but he's a baddie I'm afraid - in the film "The Warriors", he's the one who shot Cyrus. He's a white guy too.

The name does NOT have any connection with Lucifer or the devil. That has come from someone confusing two separate things.

KittenofDoom · 12/08/2013 10:56

Also having just re-read katydid02 's post above mentioning MLK - do you not realise that he was named after Martin Luther, a white European? So in your opinion he shouldn't have been? Hmm

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 11:23

Yes, I know he was, and that's fine. Just, rightly or wrongly, I would tend to assume that a Luther would be black as I'd assume he was named after MLK.

KittenofDoom · 12/08/2013 11:41

But you said "I'd assume you had the same ethnic origin. Fine if you do but not otherwise!"

That's not the same thing at all.

katydid02 · 12/08/2013 13:50

I just think of it as a name that I'd associate with somebody who was black. Same if you were called Ivan, I might assume you had Russian origins or Spanish ones if you were called Feliciano.

rosyryan · 12/08/2013 15:05

I love it.

strawberrypenguin · 12/08/2013 15:10

I think 'Lex' I'm afraid. But if you like it then go for it - be boring if we all liked the same things!

Leonas · 12/08/2013 15:32

Given that the TV series is, albeit awesome(due no less to the hotness of Idris Elba!), relatively short lived I don't think you need to worry about that, especially as the character's first name is John!
And I don't think many people would assume you have named him after MLK, regardless of ethnic origin.

Lanceolate · 12/08/2013 15:55

It makes me think of Martin Luther.

Lavidaenrosa · 12/08/2013 16:26
  1. Martin Luther (not a very good catholic man)
  2. Lex Luthor
  3. Martin Luther King.
  4. Mum (or dad) trying to be original.

Disclaimer: I wanted to name my son Amaru or Tupac Amaru for a while. I am not black, but I am of the same ethnicity of Tupac Amaru II, not Tupac Shakur (who was named after the former). In the English speaking world no one knows about this, so I used a 'normal' name for my son.
