Roy - yay or nay?

Family name but opinions invited.

My neighbour,the most irriritating twerp of a man is called Roy.
Don't saddle a poor baby with this awful name.

No to Roy
No to Royston- Royston Vasey!!!

I know a 6 year old Vincent and a 35 year old Malcolm. I really don't like either name - both in the same vein as Roy IMO, but they sit well on the individuals and don't seem at all old-manish when I'm referring to those people.

If it means something to you and you like it, go for it. He'd grow into it and make it his own.

It's my dad's name. Have to say he is a lovely man, great dad and amazing grandad. None of the negative associations some people have put on her apply at all!!!

But I wouldn't personally chose it as a baby's name. Mind you - many people chose names from two- three generations up - their grandparents and great grandparents - so in a few more years it may well become popular again.

One of our best friends in a Roy. Lovely man, big gentle kind and helpful bloke. As a name I find it a bit too short though, I keep wanting to add to it a bit!

Please no! I just can't imagine looking at a gorgeous newborn and calling him Roy. Buying a used car from a Roy I can imagine. Breastfeeding one, no.

Roy can also be short for Roylance if you feel so inclined .

Sorry, I'm also going to give it a big fat "NO!". Not a nice sound, conjures up the image perfectly described up thread of the Mondeo washing OAP, and its very short so you can't do anything with it (which isn't always important, but it is if your name is Roy!).

Its nice that you want to use it because of family connections. Roy means 'king', so how about Rex, (also short, but sounds nice IMO!). Or you could google names that mean king?

Thanks everyone! LMAO at the responses... Before DS1 was born I did similar with his name and it also got (almost) universal dislike so I went ahead with it knowing that it wouldn't get popular :D
