It's in the title. :)

I know 2 boys called this so that would influence me.

Yonihadtoask · 05/07/2013 08:40

I know a couple of boys named Jay and one named Jai.

Therefore I would think of it as a boy's name.

MsJupiterJones · 05/07/2013 08:52

I know a girl called Jay. She wasn't very nice tbh but the name is pretty, I think of it as unisex.

ovenbun · 05/07/2013 10:30

it's pretty but tbh it makes me think of jay z, perhaps use it as a nickname for a slightly longer name like jaime, then if dd has a choice of nn when she is older? :) xx

notso · 05/07/2013 10:45

I know about 7 male human Jays and one Rat called Jay also male so it seems more male to me.

I know a little girl called Jaya who's nn is Jay though.

BlueStarsAtNight · 05/07/2013 13:25

I also only know it as a boys name (usually short for Jason), so I would say no for a girl.

BlueStarsAtNight · 05/07/2013 13:26

Though actually I do know a little girl who's name begins with a J, and she is called 'J' as a nn, which I guess is kind of the same thing...

piprabbit · 05/07/2013 13:27

Wasn't one of the female singers in Bucks Fizz called Jay?

andadietcoke · 05/07/2013 18:24

It just makes me think of Jay from the inbetweeners who's revolting, but that's unlikely to be a cultural reference for long.

MagicBaguette · 05/07/2013 18:27

I like it as a nickname, not as a full name.

So a nn for Jessica, Jemma, Jemima, Jennifer etc

KateCroydon · 05/07/2013 18:30

Gatsby

CaptainJamesTKirk · 05/07/2013 18:30

I think you will have years of people mishearing you and assuming she's called Jade.

BikeRunSki · 05/07/2013 18:32

NN for any name beginning with J.

curlew · 05/07/2013 18:35

Oh give the poor child a name that's actually a name. Call her Jay as a shortening if you like.

Layl77 · 05/07/2013 19:02

I know a jaye

zipzap · 05/07/2013 19:26

Another one who thinks of it as a boys name or nickname.

At a push it might be a nickname for a girl with a name that starts with J but they don't want the traditional girly nickname that would be more normal for their name...

LtEveDallas · 05/07/2013 19:31

I have a female Jay.

sonlypuppyfat · 05/07/2013 19:31

As in Hommer Jay Simpson

LtEveDallas · 05/07/2013 19:35

Oh and it means Victory in Sanskrit, or it's a bit of a bastardisation of the Latin word for Happy.

(I didn't chose it for either of those reasons though, it has a very personal meaning to me)

BlackMogul · 05/07/2013 19:57

No. It definitely says randy Jay from The Inbetweeners. A boy! So many prettier names to choose from beginning with J. Just use it as a nickname if you must.

exoticfruits · 05/07/2013 20:00

I would assume it was short for a name beginning with J. I'm sure she would get fed up with people asking what it stands for.

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 05/07/2013 20:09

I know a female Jay in her 40s, but it is her nickname, not her given name. It works well on her, and I like it. I'd say use it but put a 'proper' name on the birth certificate.

Leeds2 · 05/07/2013 20:27

I think of it as a boy's name, as in Jay Osmond.

rockybalboa · 05/07/2013 20:37

Not for a girl, Jay is def a boys' name. I know a Jaime who goes by Jai which is really nice.
