Jude for a girl?

SuperChops · 04/07/2013 16:16

If we have a girl, DH is keen on Jude for a girl, but I'm not so sure... He doesn't like Judith or Judy, which I offered as alternatives.
So what do you think? I love Jude for a boy, but is Jude nice as a girl's name as well? FWIW, our surname begins with an S and is three syllables.

The only Jude I know personally is female - though her full name is Judith.

To be honest Im not that keen on it as a name for a boy or girl, sorry.

Eskino · 04/07/2013 16:44

It's short for Judith. Even if you are very certain that its Jude, just Jude. It will be assumed by the world that your DD's name is Judith.

I quite like it for a boy.

BartBaby · 04/07/2013 16:56

I agree with eskino. People will aleays assume its short for judith. And jude on its own i would think was a boys name. When people see it written down they would probably expect a boy.

ChocolateAndCelery · 04/07/2013 16:58

I'm Jude with Judith on my birth certificate. I'm not that keen on the name Judith, however I am glad it's my official name as I think it has more gravitas than 'Jude' on documents like exam, degree and marriage certificates.

ZolaBuddleia · 04/07/2013 17:01

I only like it for a boy, sorry.

CityGal29 · 04/07/2013 18:11

Judith with Jude / Judy short for it is an amazing name! Really 60s type cool! Why don't you do that then see what nicknames follow? Don't give her a boys name Grin

MrsRV · 04/07/2013 21:23

I LOVE the name Jude for a boy & if we have a boy this time it's top of our list & pretty much a given.

If we have another girl I love the name so much that I have considered it... Or, in order to use the name we'll just have to ensure we keep having children until we have a boy. Or, just adopt a boy :-)

I don't really like Judy or Judith if I'm honest but not sure on naming a girl Jude. If I saw it written down I would assume boy straight away... It's tough isn't it and I am in a similar predicament.

BraveLilBear · 05/07/2013 07:47

Tbh, I've always thought of Jude as a girl's name (with Mr Law the obvious exception).

Just feels girly to me to the extent that if I met a Jude I'd expect it t be a female, or a non-macho male (even Jude Law is fairly metrosexual).

But then I have weird feelings about names and sexes...eg I prefer Darwin for a girl rather than a boy.

SuperChops · 05/07/2013 10:40

Thanks for all your help. I'm thinking that Judith is the best option, so she can have the option of being Judith, Judy or Jude if she likes. Now to persuade DH...! Grin

Definitely prefer Judith nicknamed Jude.

FeegleFion · 07/07/2013 13:43

I have a 7 month old DS, Jude. And I adore his name. I haven't had a wobble about it for a second since deciding that's who he was at my 20 week scan Grin

I think it's a really cool name for a girl too, and if you like it, go for it!

I call my Jude - Rudey Dudey Judey Grin must stop calling him Judy Blush

freddy16 · 11/03/2020 06:27

Personally, I love the name Judith, and Jude is such a wonderful and distinctive shortened version, that she would have the best of both worlds. Judith is my favourite name, and Jude the best nick name IMHO ☺️

Poppydaisies · 11/03/2020 06:59

I only know female Judes. It sounds soft and feminine and is often short for Judith or Judy.

Whatsyourflava · 11/03/2020 08:12

I think Jude is cool as a stand-alone girls name

(It’s on my boy list as I love the name too)

Isthistrueor · 11/03/2020 09:05

It’s a boys name. I hate it when people use male names for females, there are literally thousands of girls names to choose from so why choose a masculine name? I don’t understand. It’s like celebs who have used James and Noah for girls, I don’t understand.

MikeUniformMike · 11/03/2020 09:11

My thoughts exactly.
Judy is nice, as are June, Jean and Joan, and Jade is not too bad but Jude is a boy's name.

Poppydaisies · 11/03/2020 09:19

Jude/Judy sounds feminine as does the name Noa.

But James definitely sounds masculine imo!

@SuperChops

My Jude is 7 yrs old now... wow, time flies!

I’ve never stopped loving his name.

he thinks The Beatles, Hey Jude, is his personal song Grin

FeegleFion · 11/03/2020 15:28

@fairylightsandwine I meant!

Sorry, SuperChops, somehow my copy and paste name turned to yours. Flowers

BadCatDirtyCat · 11/03/2020 18:46

I like it! Less keen on Judith personally.

Joan as suggested upthread is also nice.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 11/03/2020 20:52

John Lennon's son is named Julian, with the nickname "Jude".
The song "Hey Jude" is about his son :-)

MikeUniformMike · 11/03/2020 21:05

Did they really call him Jude? I thought they used Jude because Julian wouldn't scan.

123Dancewithme · 12/03/2020 22:16

I know a Judith “Jude”, I like it.

JufusMum · 13/04/2020 03:56

DD is just Jude, not Judith or Judy and I still love it - she’s 17 now and hasn’t met many other girl Jude’s.
