Have been discussing this one for a girl with dh. Possibly for a middle name rather than a first.

But what do people think?

My DD is Griselda Grumblemunch when she's in a strop. Never fails to make her smile!

Frikadellen · 01/07/2013 17:31

I wouldn't personally use it but nor do I think it is horendeous it will just become her name..

CorrieDale · 01/07/2013 17:31

Well I like it. Shades of the Chalet School....

reggiebean · 01/07/2013 17:37

Sorry, but please, please don't do that to your child. As someone who was stricken with a not-so-common/easy-to-spell/pronounce name, please, please don't.

"Grizzy, come here darling, it's time for tea."

[shudder]

Anyone over the age of 35 will probably know these. I don't know National Lampoons or Legend of Zelda but I loved Terrorhawks (a kids show with puppets like a 1980s Stingray). Zelda, I believe, was the ugly baddie who used to wear an old wedding dress.

Either way, Griselda doesn't sound nice on the ear.

Saturnalia · 01/07/2013 18:03

No idea about Legend of Zelda either, so we're not fans. The only Griseldas I've heard of, was the Chalet School Grizel (was that her nick name?) and Griselda Grantly, as was.

TallulahBetty · 01/07/2013 18:07

Ugly. Sorry. Reminds me of horrible words - grim, gristle etc

TallulahBetty · 01/07/2013 18:07

Oh but yes Zelda is fab.

DesertOrchid · 01/07/2013 18:27

Gosh, people can be nasty!

I am not sure about it, but there is a lovely one in AS Byatt's The Children's Book which made me feel really positive about the name.

I think Zelda is a great nickname for Griselda, although overall I think it's a name that makes a nice serious middle rather than a first name.

valiumredhead · 01/07/2013 18:30

Zelda yes but Griselda is not a nice name at all imo, sounds like grizzle!

ChewingOnLifesGristle · 01/07/2013 18:33

Gosh I always try to think of a tactful positive spin on these threads even if it wouldn't be my choice, but sorry it's a big big no from me.

Breezy1985 · 01/07/2013 18:37

It is awful, I'm not a fan of Zelda either but it is much, much better.

isitsnowingyet · 01/07/2013 18:39

At the end of the day - it's your choice. My daughter has the middle name of Doris - which most people would laugh at or roll their eyes - but that was my Mum's name and is very special in our family.

DalekInAFestiveJumper · 01/07/2013 18:46

Makes me think of Auntie Griselda.

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 01/07/2013 18:50

Personally I'm not keen - there's an old story about 'patient Griselda' which is basically about a woman being appallingly treated.

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 01/07/2013 18:51

It's vaguely common in my country of origin. I personal,y don't like it, but Zelda is nice. If you like Griselda, could you have two middle names? It sounds quite a severe name, so might work better as a two middle name. If it has a special meaning for you, then no one cares less about the middle name, so you could put it there- special for you, but no impact to her. Good luck.

ZolaBuddleia · 01/07/2013 18:53

Zelda is nice, but not keen on the full length version.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 01/07/2013 18:57

Gosh, people can be nasty!

Who's being nasty? It's perfectly reasonable to say you dislike a name on a thread asking your opinion on a name.

Floggingmolly · 01/07/2013 18:57

It's a parlour maid from an Agatha Christie novel sort of name.

TallulahBetty · 01/07/2013 19:02

No one is being nasty. The OP asked what we thought, not for everyone to say it's lovely.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/07/2013 19:10

Malenky - I just realised who you were from that post!

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 01/07/2013 19:13

Yes, it's me. Chilling on my island, counting my money. Smile

Who did you think I was?

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 01/07/2013 19:14

Btw, I didn't intend my post to be nasty - it's just I assume people post on here to get info like, is there a meaning attached to this I might not know?

This is the one that occurred to me: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griselda_(folklore)

If the OP shrugs it off, fine. God knows my parents ignored the fact my name is, in literature, the excusive preserve of four-year-olds and dogs. Hmm

CheeseStrawWars · 01/07/2013 19:21

"What are Terrorhawks, Legend of Zelda and National Lampoon? What percentage of people know what they are and whether there's a Griselda/Zelda in them?"

Legend of Zelda is a massively popular console game franchise from Nintendo. It's been around since the 80s with regular releases ever since; there's two new Zelda games due to launch later this year. So I would suggest a large proportion of kids and their parents will certainly know it. That there is a Zelda in it... well, it's an eponymous character, put it that way.

fanjodisfunction · 01/07/2013 19:36

My middle name is Olive, not that great when growing up in the 80's, was thought very old fashioned and frumpy. If the name means something to you and DH then use it,
